What is the craic with Del Potro these days? Not a big tennis follower but I quite liked him a few years ago. Is he over all the worst of the injuries?

Been a huge Fed fan all through his career. But the last couple of years I've been rooting against him. I'll be sick if he gets slam 18.

    Bouchard out to Cibulkova :(

Bouchard seems to be getting back to playing well, could do with getting her ranking up so she can have a better draw at the slams.

Something about Cibulkova I don't like. Hope she loses in the next round.

    Why?

He has won plenty, would be my opinion. Whats the point of the dominant player getting knocked out and things being 'shaken up' just to let Federer win no 18?

if he puts together 4 or 5 solid matches and wins it, hats off to him. but this is a real opportunity for someone else to take the tournament by the scruff of the neck.

I am not in favour, overall, of the mens tour turning into the womens tour, where no one seems capable of putting two solid tournaments in a row together, but if Djokovic begins to slip over the next few months, Federer wining isn't exactly 'the future', is it?

    Why?

Not really sure. Just gone off him the past couple years. His bottling it and failing to really perform vs. Nole on the big stage in recent years annoyed me.

I'll always root for Federer - he's wonderful to watch. He'll never get a better chance to get another win at Wimbledon.

Very strange performance by Djokovic alright.

He lacked intensity, lacked focus and just very odd performance. Wonder what was bothering him.

strange press conference too, he was asked in seven different ways what was up, at the end he flat out said he wouldn't answer. he looked like he really didn't care at all.

I thought he would have a dip after finally wining the French, but this seemed different.

anyways, murray should win this now, he can tell lendl to hop it, as he only hired him to help beat djokovic...

Well he's nearly 35, don't think there are many players who have performed as well at that age.

I don't know how you can seriously say he "bottles it". He's in his 30s, past his best years and with four children in his life now that probably make focusing solely on tennis a bit more difficult. I think I'd cut him some slack for losing against a guy who is currently in his prime and has been playing his very best tennis.

Well , compare this year with last.

Last year after losing the RG final he came out extra motivated to put that right, he knew what he had to do - and he did it.

It was part of his motivation to get that RG title, and so was the USO, and AusOpen, now he has achieved that, he could be a little cocky - but don't think this was all of it, but for sure he probably feels less motivated.

Olmypic Gold will be a huge motivation for him, but apart from that, I don't know what he has to chase ? - he can't catch Federer on 17 (mayyybe 18 ??)

one or 2 more slams max for Djokovic - Aus Open and maybe a US.

one of the all time greats - but sadly not the all time great.

Oh yeah, that crowd today was a fúcking disgrace - sure cheer the underdog, but lets be honest they are only cheering because it virtually guarantees the title for Murray.

stay classy British crowd ..>snip> sorry .. wont post again.

Didn't see any tennis today so can only post my thoughts on the results.

The big story of the day is obviously Djokovic losing, which is shocking, even more so because he had a night to mull it over. Still, I'm pleased with the result and it's nice to know Djokovic is human after all. It also injects some much needed excitement into the men's game, and it'll be fascinating to see who'll make the final from the top half. Fed'll be favourite, but I'd be surprised if he did. I think Raonic might step up. Be interesting to see how it goes. It also, of course, means that Andy won't play his nemesis in the final should he make it, which is some extra motivation. He's now the favourite to win the whole thing, and deservedly so, I really hope he can do it!

Now onto the ladies, deary me Petra. Now to be fair, Makarova is a very difficult R2 opponent, and I'm surprised she wasn't seeded, but Petra should obviously have won that. It's really baffling, I mean she's always been inconsistent but now she can't even rely on Wimbledon? Quite pleased to see Sabine lost though, it seems she too can no longer rely on Wimbledon

Bottom half of the women's draw is intriguing, there's about five different ladies who could make the final imo. I think I'd most enjoy seeing Kerber make it, her matches can be great to watch, but I think Venus could well be in with a realistic shout too. Disappointed Genie lost today, but also happy for Cibulkova. Should be a great match against Radwanska, one Aga could very well lose.

Delighted that I'll be off work to watch Manic Monday, there's some incredible matches looming that day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭PressRun

Venus is in round 4 and there hasn't really been much talk about her, but she's getting the job done.

I think Coco Vandewegh could go well too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Del Potro's tournament is done then. Lost in 4 to Pouille quite comfortably.

Tsonga and Isner could be settling in for a while here. 8-7 in the fifth and neither is getting near the others serve

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭PressRun

You'd have to think that whatever happens here, the winner might struggle against Gasquet after this battle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,522 ✭✭✭✭paulie21

Isner trying to break his own record

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭PressRun

Kyrgios/Murray would be one to look forward to.

Isner and Tsonga on 17-16 games in the final set! Immense stuff.

    Tsonga won 19-17

Devastated with Delpo's loss. Obviously wasn't at 100%. Can't wait for his USO, expecting big things.

An observation. The official start date for this year's tournament was Monday 27 June 2016. The end date is Sunday 10 July 2016. Thus, in that period, there are two Sundays (03 July 2016 and 10 July 2016). Thus, how can today (03 July 2016) be referred to as the "Middle Sunday"?

I actually really like Cibby, looks hungry as hell these days, and actually fancy her to smash Aggie off the court tomorrow.

I have reservations about Kyrgios' temperament, which might prevent him from playing to full tilt, but he's definitely capable of having a very good tournament. Wonder will Roger feel a bit more pressure now Djokovic is gone. He'll surely be expected to make a final.

    .

Yeah but Kyrigos is a guy who when on is absolutely frightening, he is inconsistent, but very dangerous. I actually think he is Murray's biggest challenge in that half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭PressRun

I agree that he definitely has loads of potential and is capable of taking a scalp. It's just a question of him keeping his head in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Aye knowing Nick, he smashes Murray tomorrow and then loses to Gasquet in straight sets:pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,658 ✭✭✭Halloween Jack

Don't think kyrgios has the juice to beat Murray over 5 sets at the moment. With djokovic's form it's fairly easy to forget quite hie good andy's year has been, semi or better in every tourney he's entered since Miami and only lost to nadal or Djokovic in that time. Murray might not win Wimbledon but whoever beats him will have to put in a monumental shift

Really? That's very optimistic imo. Fair enough he got a win over Wawrinka, but he can lose to anyone if he really wants to. It's still a long way back for Delpo.

Tomorrow's order-of-play out. I think Radwanska-Cibulkova deserves better than an 11.30am start on bloody court 3 :( Federer-Johnson does not deserve centre. Obviously I know that's a futile sentence, there's now way Federer wasn't going to be on centre, but that match shouldn't! Otherwise pretty happy with the spread of matches, hoping to watch Radwanska-Cibulkova, Halep-Keys, Serena-Kuznetsova and then Murray-Kyrgios.

What time is Murray Kyrgios expected to start? I'd like to catch it if at all possible.

Because it's in the middle of the tournament

Besides a lot of the players would have been there from a few days before hand so it would be the middle Sunday for them

    No set time.

Its third match on centre court after Roger v Johnson and Serena v Kuznetsova.

I suppose between 5 and six, but I don't think Roger v Johnson is the certainty that some think it is, Johnson underrated on grass and always wary of Serena against anyone around here.

I dunno, as I said in previous post, think people are downplaying Johnson, Willis and Evans are nowhere near his class whatsoever. Johnson probably loses 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 now:p

Aye for me those are the matches to go out of the way for, although I'd add Gasquet v Tsonga as well, neither guys will win it outright, but that has to be a fun little match also.

Very true. Andy has had a hell of a year. Only Nole on form has halted him. I can't see Fed getting to the final. I reckon he gets beaten in one of his next two matches. Nishikori or Cilic will halt thim. There are still real dangerous threats in the tournament now that Nole is gone.

I can't see Federer getting to the final either, for him to make the final he will need to keep all his matches short and hope that he is gets his rest day in between. If he has a 5 setter or if he has to play on consecutive days even if they are 3 setters he wont make the final and with the players left in his half of the draw I cant see him getting easy matches like he has been.

Any idea why they didn't try and get the roof to blend in with the look of centre court i.e maybe paint it green rather than white.

It looks really cheap and tacky looking and takes away from the asthetics of centre court (on TV at least).

Really enjoying this match between cibulkova and radwanska, the quality of the rallies is very high. Radwanska looks to be on top at the moment but this could shift very easily

The only good thing I guess about it not being is I might not have watched it from the start if it had not started at 11:30. Tennis being played right now would be worthy of the final!

Sad for Radwanska, but I was rooting for Cibulkova towards the end, she absolutely earned that. Not sure if a slam will ever happen for Aga now :( Now Domi, don't ruin it by losing to Makarova or Vesnina

Oh no, lovely Lucie lost :( I got Kerber as the bottom-half finalist, failing that Venus.

    What's he up to??

I'm stuck in Saorview-land today, and no coverage on Irish telly :( I had thought they'd cover the second week, I'm sure they used to in the past.

Kygrios seemed to throw in the towel on this match some time ago. Shame he's so contrary and probably utterly uncoachable, because there's a lot of talent there.

TG4 used to but they haven't for a year or so. Setanta Ireland have it now.

Kyrgios has all the talent in the world, would be an awful shame to see it go unfulfilled. His own fault though! Completely forgot that he's no coach til McEnroe brought it up in commentary. Nick could benefit from someone imo.
