Anything better would be great but to be honest at the start of training my mind fixated on 3:15:xx and that became the goal.

Don't know how old you are psalm69 but if you bagged a sub 3:15 you'd have a GFA for London so worth going for?

Hi All. Will be going to marathon to support some friends running. Just wondering if anybody can advise where best to park close to heartbreak hill or around that section that runners will really need a bit of a boost. Will have a baby with us so don't want to be walking too far from car for feeding etc etc. Will be coming in on M4 from from the midlands.

Im guessing to head onto M50 southbound but where best from there in your opinion? Obviously will be loads of road closures and not familiar with the area so trying to have a plan in place?

Any advise would be really appreciated.

    Thanks

Heading into town on the N11 if you take the left before fosters avenue opposite the entrance for the Radisson there is a cul de sac on your immediate left that runs parallel to the N11. You can park up here and are only 2 minutes away from where the course joins the N11. The stretch from the bottom of fosters avenue to the UCD flyover is usually very quiet so you could arrange to be there.

Have you seen this lad from Newry - he goes into Mary Macs for a pint most years as he passes. You might be an hour or two ahead of him though :)

Why would you do this to yourself with an injury? 7 hours walking on a weak ankle could seriously aggravate it and keep you side-lined for months....seems crazy!

It's relatively fine now, I've seen the physio and been stretching and strengthening daily - just not confident to run on it yet (much as I'd love to). Still getting the damn medal :p

I'm slowly approaching defcon 4 levels of taper madness. I'm anxious on rest days to go for a run while simultaneously being nervous about going for a run on running days - in case something happens like I twist an ankle or tweak a muscle. I'm definitely coming down with the plague too and I'm eating way too much food. Or am I eating not enough food. Or not enough good food. I think my pillows are going to give me a crick in the neck. I've also got a pain in everything. Roll on Sunday.

Tell me about it. Sundays run was a panic run where every little niggle was highlighted. Tonights run was a breeze and I felt really fresh. Stop f**king with me, Taper Gods!

In my ignorance, I would have expected more roads to be closed. Is it a case that the roads on the route outside of the city centre will not be completely closed to traffic?

My wife & kids are planning on travelling from Lucan to Kimmage to cheer me on at the 16 mile mark and then make their way into the city centre to the finish line. Has anyone got suggestions on how they could navigate the roads?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭spaceylou

Based on my experience last year - the road closures are kept to a minimum and the real difficulty when driving is if you want to cross the route. Your support crew might have difficulty crossing the route close to kimmage. I definitely recall more roads being closed last year than are listed on the website - might have to get creative in navigation OR cross early before runners reach Kimmage and go for breakfast in harold's cross or something before going to cheer you on.

They should stay outside the route, get off the M50 at Templogue, drive down to the corner of Fortfield and Wainsford roads. When you pass, go around the outside again to the N11 and drive in that way.

The roads are not completely closed but there are rolling closures. Crossing the route is impossible in most places, very difficult in one or two, and no problem in Chapelizod and the Stillorgan road

    1989 Dublin marathon full recording

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpCNacBTx9Y

Just found this on YouTube, amazing it could be done in 1989 when the country was on it's knees, which you can really see in the helicopter shots in the first few miles by Kevin St./Coombe/Rialto.

Also worth watching for the ads alone.

Weather update: looks like it will be dry and cloudy with temperatures rising to as high as 16C! One running layer will suffice.

Looks like there'll be little to no wind either.

    1989 Dublin marathon full recording

Just found this on YouTube, amazing it could be done in 1989 when the country was on it's knees, which you can really see in the helicopter shots in the first few miles by Kevin St./Coombe/Rialto.

Also worth watching for the ads alone.

No pacers or gels either in those days :) let alone wave starts by the looks of it!

Thanks for posting that - fascinating alright. Love the drink stations - are some lads drinking milk? Interesting course too!

    Thanks!

Do it the easy way. Drive down the greenhills road and park before the Wakinstown Roundabout and see him there at the roundabout. Then drive from there to redcow and get luas in.

Was thinking the same about the milk myself, when was the last time that route was used does anyone know? Definitely a route I could relate to a little bit more than the current one.
