2014 DCM was the strangest conditions I ever ran in, very humid, I was only wearing a singlet and I remember coming over dolphins barn bridge and feeling my upper arm and there was a thick film of sweat on my skin, never experienced that before or since.
Not long back from my 2nd last (short) training run before the big day, legs felt fresh and I'm trotting up chesterfield Ave a good min faster than PMP, felt effortless. I can see a lot of people falling in to the trap on Sunday of feeling great at the start and kicking on and paying for it at the business end.

Same as that in 2014, albeit I wasn't as fit as other years but once I went over 2hrs running I was wrecked in the heat, makes it a long day if the first 7 miles aren't respected.

People need to take into account the amount of elevation changes (running downhill can take as much out of you as uphill) in the first half compared to the second.

First 2 miles - flat to downhill
    2 to 7 - uphill
    7 to 10 - downhill
    10 to 15 - long gradual uphills

    then
    15 to 20.5 - flat or downhill
    20.5 to 22 - uphill
    22 - 26.2 - flat or downhill

Last 11 miles is where to focus on pushing on.
First 15 is just for ensuring a base pace and keeping as hydrated as possible.

I can confirm the fears as I had a DNF in 2014 (mile 20.5) because I forgot to drink enough (!) so I hope to go further this time...

I hope if it is true they don't run out of water and I (or others) don't have to scavenge around discarded bottles for some! I'll need because I'll probably cry if the weather is that bad.

What time are people thinking of getting to start area at?

I believe 2014 was carnage. I DNF'd and recall friends finishing 20 mins off their targets.

Most blamed the heat. If it's anything like 2014, a negative slip is the best plan?

An even split will have you wrecked given how hard first half of course is compared to second.

I think the consensus after 2014 was a lot of people ruined their race by sticking to a plan and not running to conditions and course.

Do the Dublin pacers take this into account or is it usually even splits?

2014 was a mad day. I blew up badly around mile 17 and ended walking most of the way after that. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
On Sunday I'm going to go easy until mile 15/16 and see how the body is. If I have it I'll up the pace from there. If not well there will be other days.

2014 was my first and only marathon until this coming Sunday. Are you telling me that it might be easier this time?? :D

In fairness, I couldn't find it any harder than the last time...

Not following the thread that closely so this may have already been posted, here's an RTE report from the first Dublin marathon back in 1980.

A couple of lads running off a couple of seconds early, and the lads in the uniforms, not sure if Gardai or medics, that get swallowed up at the start are hillrious, Dick Hooper without a moustache, and mention of a runner that got ran over by a car who had to be hospitalised.

+1. I got to castleknock gates and knew I was in trouble. Took my first walking break at 13 miles :(
Rule no. 1 for me this year is to take it handy for the uphill miles 2-7 and get settled. And also to not get worked up about keeping pace in the congestion at the start.

Can we NOT talk about 2014 - horrible experience

Funny story after watching that clip of Dick Hooper winning. I'm a sub par runner at best. Wife and I had an appointment with the bank manager. We were 5mins late so I told her to jump out of the car while I parked and start. I park, walk into the office and wife is mid story telling the bank manager how much I love running and how great I am (as any loving wife would)
I look at the managers face...........look at the name plate....back again at the face.
Manager was only Dick Hooper "Ignore my wife...she knows nothing"
Such a humble man, not once did he go on about himself. Was only after the meeting I had to explain to my wife who he was.

Great clip. 70 women out of 2,000 runners? Thankfully we've made some progress over the years...

I am even more nervous this year.

My injuries, disappointing training and now weather! Argh I'm going to try and blank it all out!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭chinguetti

2014 was humid but too many people didn't pace themselves right. People who bombed by me going into the park finished 30 minutes behind me. Pacing is so important in any marathon but in warmer weather, its vital to start slowly and smartly.

I passed over 1,200 people in the second half of the race so whatever the weather, pacing is the important thing.

Best of luck to everyone taking on DCM this weekend.
Looking forward to it but more importantly the beer after it.
Starting to forget what Guinness tastes like :o

Frank Shorter seemed to manage marathons and Guinness, though I don't think the modern day dietitians and nutritionists would recommend it!

I'm ten days into a chest cold and I did a test run this morning to find my heart rate is 20 bpm above where it should be. I'll pick up my number but I won't be starting if I haven't got over the cold and it's not looking too promising at the moment.

What's the best/quickest way to get from Hueston to RDS ?
Bus to merrion square - change bus to RDS or Luas to Connolly and dart to Lansdowne Rd and a quick walk ?

Personally I think 2014 was deceptive, I'm pretty sure it was overcast and it was definitely windy (the wind in of itself was a problem too) so it didn't seem that warm and personally I don't think you really notice the humidity first thing in the morning (particularly when you're not really going to be exerting yourself before the marathon but maybe that's just me).

On the plus side looking at the forecast it doesn't look like it'll be that warm this year (the daily data shows temperature of 15 - 16 degrees in 2014 and they're forecasting 9 - 13) and the lighter winds will hopefully make it easier too.

Anyway I'm going to have to stop reading this thread before i drive myself mad but the very best of luck to everyone participating, hope it goes well and if possible try to enjoy it! The medal and t-shirt will be worth it ;)

Trainings been good but was away on holidays and haven't run much over the last two weeks. Decided to just relax and spend some time with the family. I'm unsure if I'm in pb shape and would be very happy with sub 3, which could be a struggle.
