Looking for hatchback (3000-5000 euro)

Here's the deal lads. I'm a young guy, just recently turned 20. I've had my full licence for 2 years now and have been driving a 98 Starlet for that period of time.

I love the car, nippy and never given me a spot of bother, but I think it's time to move on (insurance is an absolute killer because of the age of the car, I'm paying over double it's value annually).

I'm looking for a newer hatchback as an upgrade, possibly something along the lines of a Focus, Golf, Leon or whatever you think would suit. Ideally I'd like it to be no more than 10 years old.

Toyota Corolla seems like a natural step up from a Starlet. Will be just as reliable. Run out Luna model from 2006 to 2007 comes with alot of toys as standard and 1.4 litre is one of the nippiest in that class of car.

Another option would be the Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30, both very similar to the Corolla and 1.4 litre engine in both is very lively too.

1.4 litre engines in the likes of the Golf, Focus and Leon are for the most part woefully underpowered compared to the models above.

And I'm presuming insurance would also be more reasonable on the three you've mentioned compared to Golfs, Focus' (Foci?) etc...

No idea as insurance prices depend on the individual and your driving experience just as much as the car. VAG cars tend to carry a higher loading for young drivers as they are popular with being modified by young lads.
