Revolut card? Though it does take a few days to arrive but exchange rate probably will remain similar by the time it arrives.

Going to London in September is now a good time to buy sterling in cash or what would be the best option? Some websites saying it will go on par again with euro. Where is the best place to buy?

Just went into Newry and saved about 15 euro on the weekly shop. However I did spend 25 euro extra on fuel on a trip I normally wouldn't make. The shops had a lot of ROI registered cars there today...some great bargains

How would that work though? You top it up in Euro, can you then choose to have it change the currency to pound and hold it?

Amazon's exchange rate might be favourable today.

    Mastercard is 0.7645
    Bank of Ireland is 0.7862
    Amazon is 0.77531

rubbish - the exchange rate has moved all of 1p since last week when the rate was 0.79 - 0.796.

So to "save" €15, it would suggest that your spend was over €1200.

Add in your extra fuel spend, exchange rate change costs, and additional time, you lost heavily.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭eeguy

Are you really saving that much on a general purchase
If you spend thousands there is a savng to be had bit for a 50 voucher what is the saving ? A pint

It's only about 6 cent on the euro. So a half pint.

But, but, but they posted it in BA, so it must be a bargain.

Interesting. I have used a few different price checker websites for Amazon and Amazon.co.uk isn't displaying any information across all the different price checking websites.

Probably killed the API feed for a few days until things settle.

And revolut is 0.8079 at time of posting. Anyone with a smartphone really needs to be using revolut if they are regular GBP purchasers.

Is all that renovation finished in The Quays? Haven't been there in about 18 months. All that investment was with a view to cross-border trade that died off (mostly). The booze cruises could be back. (On land.) :D

I have a sterling endownment policy that I cashed in 2 weeks ago. If I wouldve left it until today (it matures soon) I wouldve lost out on the guts of €500, so happy with that! (You may need to travel back in time to avail of this bargain :D)

Yep. Can change to any currency free of charge using the latest live exchange rates.

Or you can just top it up in euro, pay in sterling and it uses the latest exchange rate (weekdays only... weekend exchange rates tend to be a bit worse for some reason).

I've Revolut installed, how do I get benefit from that? Do I buy amazon Gift vouchers after topping up Revolut with GBP using my irish Visa card?

Revolut are using the latest exchange rate. I've already made 2 orders on Amazon.co.uk at 8am this morning (had items I was waiting to buy until the sterling plummeted, as I predicted).

Saved about €15 on what it would have cost me yesterday.

    Eyeing a new PS4 too...

Could you advise me how to use Revolut? I have a few items I want to buy off of Amazon.

There are details in a thread about them here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057481488

You need to sign up using an Android or iPhone by downloading the Revolut app.

So should i be rushing to the north to do the shopping or not

probably not. It depends what you're looking for.

a lot of stuff is so much cheaper in the south that sterling would have to drop much more before you'd save by heading north.

If you are using Revolut you could just keep the cash with them till you need a purchase in Sterling. You top up in Euros, buy sterling and use the Sterling balance by default on any purchases.

Assuming of course that Revolut don't suddenly go out of business (not that there's any signs of that).

Correct, if you want to lock in current rates. You could also leave the cash on the card in Euro and it will just when you please an order. Note for amazon they only charge the card on dispatch of the order.

Would the Revolut card not use the Mastercard exchange rates for international card payments?

Edit: Ahh, you transfer Euro to GBP and then make the payment in GBP?

Nope, haven't even started the actual building work. Apparently they are being sued by one of the Major tenants, as they were supposed to make provisions for additional parking (i.e. first build multi storey car park), before destroying half of the car park spaces.

In additional some of the proposed new tenants are also supposed to have changed their mind, so likely that the Bank put a halt on the fundings.

When does Revolut actually lock in the rate for the weekend? At end of day's trading ?

    It's 81.45 to euro a min

"indicative rates based on previous day's close"

Last Thursday it was .796, on Monday it was .784

If you start doing shopping based on comparing rates from minute to minute you'll end up in the crazy house.

Basically since February sterling has been in a range from .78 - .81. For a short couple of days it dropped below .77. Its gone jus above the 81p mark now.

So condiering it still within or cose to the average of the past 5 months, I simply cannot see where the sudden euphoria is coming from in this thread.

Over the last few days I've been keeping an eye on a product, hoping that currency changes will net me a bargain. This evening I've noticed that the price of postage on said product (posted from the UK), has increased from £9.70 to £11-something. Base price of the product remains at $40-odd euro and I last checked the prices this morning. There's only one option on postage for the item, and it can't be sent for free.

Just something to keep an eye on for all you Brexit bargain hunters.

Crazy stalker alert (checking my posts get over it lol)
I'm commenting because people are getting carried away with a 6% drop and believing reporters quoting 30 year sterling low when in actual fact the euro has also dropped
Not like it was 7/8 years ago when a euro was equal to a pound
Where were all these posts in February when it was the same rate against the euro

    Time to unfollow this
People getting excited over very little,

So the financial markets are totally wrong as are the currency traders as are all the REAL TIME charts and you are right?

What you probably have are the rip off small consumer rates that are about 6-8% off market rates.

I'd never ever ever buy currency from the post office - their rates are nearly as bad as the airport counters.

Sorry if it's been mentioned already.

Has anyone noticed that Amazon raised prices after the results was announced?

I was checking some items on Thursday and they all increased on Friday by minimum 11% plus.

    Coincidence or what?

I advise you to use camelcamelcamel to check prices to ensure you're getting the bargain you think you're getting.

This big time, people don't understand that the major drop was on sterling versus the dollar. The euro has also dropped, so their is little change between sterling and euro.

I've friends who were getting all excited about mad shopping sprys in the UK until I had to explain this to them.

Now if you have dollar to convert to sterling, then there is some very nice money to make.

No, no change on anything in my basket or any item that I had been keeping an eye on. Good advice on using camelcamelcamel. There are plugins for it for various web browsers to make it easier.

Yeah, if you look at the GBP/EUR exchange rate in the past few months the current value is on the lower end of the spectrum but not crazy low. The next few days/weeks might bring further drops though.

Ill admit I thought/hoped we'd see a quick dash to the 2008/2009 one for one type rates.
I bought some stuff last week when "leave" was at its peak... There really isn't a huge difference in the rate now versus then, not on online purchases. On a car or high value items yeah... but still a little disappointing consider all the furore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,685 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

You do need to look at it in slightly longer terms than just drop from day to day.
It is a significant saving buying now vs buying this time last year or even last November (if products price in sterling hasn't increased).

You could pick any arbitrary time to make the current rate look better or worse value relatively.
I'm just not all that excited about this yet, compared to 90p plus for average purchases. The kind you don't put off for years at a time.
