Everyone here must be a pro athlete with those resting heart rates!
    How are you calculating them?

Just check your pulse when you wake up.
I haven't checked mine in a morning in a good while. I'll check tomorrow and update my earlier figures if necessary

Lots of Boardies in good shape!!

214 - (age X 0.8) for males or 209 - (age X 0.9) for females gives a better estimate for active people than the 220 - age yardstick from WWII.

For those with high HR it will be out but not by as much as 220 method for most.

I am trying to find out once and for all is the formula of "220 minus your age" useful or not for working out heart rate zones. To this end i am asking you to simply put your age, min HR and max HR as an answer to this post.
I will kick off with mine, which will make it obvious which side of the argument i side on.

Age: 48, Min HR: 41, Max HR 204

    HRM calibrated?

Out of interest - how is resting HR measured?

Spent the last hour with the HRM on - I adopted various positions, attempted mildly meditative states etc. and the lowest registered was 51 / 52. The moment any movement took place it was >60.

I am taking this to mean that I am overtraining and will vegetate for the rest of the weekend.

I take it first thing in the morning as soon as I wake up. It varies depending on how well you've slept though to be fair.

Stop watch on the phone/finger on your pulse/count/simple. :)

Seriously though, the old counting method works when it's a small number - A bit more difficult keeping track when out of breath during an extended effort so the HRM is used to get the max figure for me

Id say its not the most accurate tho.
Id be amazed if all the sub 50s here are accurate. Thats way below the normal average.

I went to sleep with HR on last night and recorded it ;) Min HR: 46, avg: 53.

It's easier to manually count a low HR than a normal one. If somebody is fit, below 50 is not unusual at all.

Can someone post a reliable chart for RHR? According to every chart I've seen so far, this site is filled with pro level athletes.

I have a Fitbit HR (as does my wife) so I'm quoting from it. I've seen else where, any group of relatively fit leisure athletes will have a high proportion of rest rates in the 50's. It's somewhat genetic, and reading between the lies the printed guides are conservative because a low resting rate if you are unfit is a risk factor.

    I'm 41 my resting rate is 46
Max is 205 only recorded a few days ago.
Temp is 165-175 and threshold is 186.
220 - age is complete rubbish for any type of athlete.

i was once told that this was inaccurate - to measure it when you've been seated for a while, but if you do it in bed, do it after you get into bed, not just after you've woken.

anyway, i use the 'instant heart rate' app on android. just after sitting down at the computer, it's giving me a rate of 66bpm.
