Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Switzerland vs Poland

    2:00pm Saturday 25th June
    Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

We're back with the football and kicking Saturday's action off with a battle of two teams that finished runner-up in their respective groups, Switzerland and Poland.

The prize for the winner of this one is a clash with Croatia or Portugal in the quarter-finals.

Robert Lewandowski reckons the Swiss are the favourites for this one (the bookies don't seem to agree) but can Lewandowski get back to goalscoring form as he hasn't scored in six games. Will he finally get up and running on Saturday or will Shaqiri and friends be the ones going through?

I'm going to say a 2-1 win for Poland after extra-time. Who do you reckon goes through out of these two?

Lewandowski is bound to start scoring sooner rather than later. His entire career stats suggest so. And he's playing well too without scoring. Poland to win 3-1.

The pitch looks fairly impressive all the same.

Really enjoying Duffer on the commentary. He's got a great combination of decency, directness and honesty.

Draw a very short price here, would have thought it was right though and the draw is most likely result. Been a very lively start though!

What a miss from Milik after 25 seconds, goal wide open and at his mercy.

first of many games to go to penalties, imo.

Terrible offside decision there. Good god, he was nowhere near offside. Can you imagine how frustrating it must be for the strikers to see such stupid mistakes from the officials at this level.

Poland looking eager. Pumped up start. Switzerland need to cool them down and slow the play here. Some opening miss too

the group games are where it's at. Too many teams play for penalties in the knockouts after entertaining in the group.

Northern Ireland, Ireland, Slovakia, Hungary, Iceland all will do it, so will Italy probably. Switzerland and Poland have the attacks to score, but Seferovic and Milik have already missed more than their fair share.

Blazekowski (spelling) is having a good tournament. Played well v Hungary also

Some fortunate aspects about the goal but the defending was terrible. Poland have been better and should have scored before now.

Thought the Swiss had come back into it just before they conceded

Xhaka seems to be playing over cautiously. He's probably the best playmaker on the pitch so that's gonna have to change if the Swiss have a chance.

Ronnie whelan thick as feck on commentary. "They never give anything"

Błaszczykowski is going to be a bargain for someone this summer. The Swiss striker is simply taking up space.

He was referring to the 5th official and he's not wrong.

Is he really a playmaker though?

He's more of a player that dictates from the front of the back 4.

It's unreal how often a scuffed shot along the ground goes through the keepers legs and ends up looking a good finish

I see him as a deep lying playmaker, he usually pings diagonal passes around the pitch but hasn't been able to pull that off at all today. The Poles are doing a good job of keeping him quiet.

    Bad tackle.

Why did the BBC react so shocked to that tackle, it was just a random missedtimed slide tackle, chill out.

Lawrenson just said 'so much for neutrality' what?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,928 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Nice to see Lewandowski get hit with a hard tackle for once.

At least he didn't scream like a baby like he usually does when he dives.

    Brilliant tackle :)

Lewandowski is constantly rolling around exaggerating tackles, so I've no sympathy. have some of that as they used to say!

If ever a tackle deserved a round of applause it was that one.

Lewandowski gets a 10/10 for his over reaction. Fair play to clattenberg for not buying into it. Yellow card was the correct punishment.

Pearce and Lawrenson are a toxic combination.

Pearce wanted a red card and deportation in his judgemental style, Lawrenson will want the player to get up and get on with it.

Liechtenstein on the pitch according to Alkin.

Lawrenson has been like that for the last 20+ years to be honest with his bad puns and jokes that he is the only one to laugh at.

    Thats a great save

I think Fabianski just made that save look incredibly easy. Brilliant positioning and what a save.

The thing is, he has scored 4 goals in the same time it took you to type that post in the past. He isn't the only hyped player to under perform at this tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I wonder will the Swiss get closer than that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,930 ✭✭✭PeterTheEighth

Arrrgghhh. unlucky Swiss there. Great strike off the bar.

Could be life in the game yet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

If Poland concede now they'll only have themselves to blame (or the coach) they need to freshen the middle.
