Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I really cannot believe how conservative the Poland coach has been. Madness running his midfield into the ground

If Poland have three good subs to make here in extra time, they could blow the tired Swiss away. Could end up being a bit of tactical genius to wait this long.

    Or sheer stupidity.

There's been a number of terrific goals so far in this tournament (Payet's against Romania, etc.), but that finish from Shaqiri has to be one of the best of its type ever. Rivaldo scored a cracker of a bicycle kick for Barcelona from a similar range also, but I'm struggling to think of any other contenders (Pele's equaliser in Escape to Victory, anyone??).

Terrible defending for that goal, I hope the Nazi's defense was shot for that error.

Might be waiting to bring on 3rd choice keeper for the penos Van Gaal style!

Lewandowski is a really bad passer of the ball

Seems to be more of proper out and out striker he scores goals and that's all you really get from him

I'd be all for ET being reduced to 2 x 10min periods.

I'd bring back the golden goal or go straight to penalties

Golden goal would be the better option but then you could have teams being sucker punched against the run of play

You'd really lose all respect for Lewandowski when he continues to dive on the ground despite how good a player he is.

    Some save that.

Have a feeling Fabianski will have a stormer if this goes to penos.

Switzerland deserve to win this. Fabianski has made some great saves to keep Poland in it.

He's made some fantastic saves already. Would be a great battle between the two goalkeepers if it goes to penalties.

Don't see the fuss about Embolo at all, very overrated by the looks of it. Give me Origi any day over him.

Ah, it's the same as being suckered punched when the other team parks the bus and beats you on penalties. I've always thought they should take 11 penalties during the warm up, and if it was still a draw after extra time then the team who won on penalties would go through.

    This would do two things:
    1) make sure that at least one of the teams had to play offensively throughout the game.
    2) take away the absolute heart break for the unlucky player who missed the penalty. Thinking of JuanFran for example :-(

But the other thing of course is penalties are the most enthralling part of football, particularly in international football where the games are generally pretty dull.

Though Switzerland deserve the win, I think Poland will win on penalties. Fabianski being crucial.

Woo penalties ! While we wait more shots of the crowd please

In before the "penalties are a lottery" rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭sonic85

Extra time is such a waste in my opinion. What's the point in running players into the ground for an extra half an hour. If the game finishes level just go straight to penalties. The players would have to be drained after that. It would surely have an effect on the next game for the winners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,930 ✭✭✭PeterTheEighth

Dont agree with Sadlier there. Luck has a lot to do with penalties. You could slip (like John Terry) on the run up. You could take a good penalty but the keeper could guess right way (like Aldridge vs Wimbledon FA Cup 1988). You might hit a terrible penalty but the keeper dives the wrong way and saves your bacon.

the BBC are itching to get on with the Wales/NI pre-prepared montages, side-pitch interviews and graphics, the penalties are getting in the way:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Switzerland kicking first, meaning that they statistically have a 61% chance of winning the shootout.

Silly from Lewandowski to allow the Swiss to kick first.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,414 ✭✭✭Toobz

Sommer a very good goalkeeper too, fancy the swiss

Watch for a lot of these takers to kick across their bodies.

Really want Poland to win purely because of that banner Switzerland unfurled in Dublin "14000 in Cyprus, 0 in 2008 Euros" or something to that effect.

Sadlier thinks there is no luck involved?? 9/10 keepers would have saved that, Swiss player won the lottery there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,325 ✭✭✭smileyj1987
