Shearer wanted job last time he reveals, asked for it over n over. Wants it again now.

It's great to see the match of the day boys a bit animated for once.
    Really enjoying this episode:)

It actually is. It's like Shearers veil was down. And it wasn't a spur of the moment thing. He kept it going all the way through. Even had a go at the FA for not hiring him in the past!

Too much respect paid to Rooney. He should have been taken off much earlier tonight. If Rashford had replaced him earlier, it might have made a difference.

If anyone was left on too long, it was Kane and Sterling.

No mention of how bad Rooney played on the BBC.

I'm sorry, but the players having to answer the questions, with no manager in sight is ridiculous.

Fair play to Hart and Rooney for answering some of them.

Hodgson slinking off right on the final whistle to make his resignation statement with the players basically still out on the pitch is mental. And I stand by the notion that it's cowardly.

The man could've made the same statement when he arrived home, while actually fielding some questions that the players are now having to field.

Agree, but Rooney wasn't much better and he was supposed to be captaining them. When the captain is playing like shyte, there's not much hope for the rest of them.

I'm stunned at that tbh, he was terrible tonight. He kept giving the ball away.

Shearer has been awesome, was never a huge fan of him as a pundit but everything he said has been truthful. Jenas has been pretty honest too but not as vocal.
Shearer spot on, ripped them to pieces, its about time someone on English TV had the balls to say it

Never had time for Shearer but he clearly cares and done well there. The likes of Jenas and Ferdinand know too many of the players to tell it like it is, its why they are no use analysing England. Crouch was the same on ITV defending the players and usuing youth as an excuse, too scared to speak out

So strange seeing people post verbatim what didi said even seen the use of the word fraud a couple of times...

The point is moot because no matter what planet you are on, england have produced a more talented group of players than iceland. Yes, the players aren't technically at the top level, but they shouldn't have to be to beat iceland. In their own heads from minute one they thought they could win without fighting for it, thinking they'd just outclass iceland. Iceland played some lovely stuff at times but overall, they had spirit and knew they had to earn a victory, england were hoping that lining up with big names was enough.

England had no midfield, and dier had a poor passing game, which left them with rooney to try and run the show and we know how that goes. Every single player played poorly.

The FA like to employ people they can "work" with. That's why guys like Clough didn't get the job and the likes of Roy and McLaren did.

I'd agree.. he was definitely gonna (have to) go, but there's a way to do it that would have shown a bit of respect for the position, the team and staff and the country.. and that was not it.

He practically ran down the tunnel as soon as the final whistle went and was probably in a car by the time the players got back to the dressing room.

Part of the reason Hodgson rsigned so quickly IMO is that it was in time for the papers to report it tomorrow. If he left it till they got home there'd just be another day or two of tabloid tossers baying for his head and then claiming credit for when he resigns. The discussion will turn to his successor, as has been witnessed with Shearer throwing his hat into the ring and it'll take the heat of Roy.

In other words they won't spend several days camped outside his house, that's what he wants and I can't blame him. He needs to do a thorough media debriefing and interview in Heathrow tomorrow, or whenever they go home.

Maybe in under 10's football yeah. At senior international level I'd still expect more from the 10 other professionals playing alongside him. I thought he was alright in the first half actually, seemed to do as much as he could. Very poor int he 2nd half admittedly.

Say what you want about Harry Redknapp but England would not have played like they did tonight under him

The English FA once again showed their utter stupidity and petty politics by appointing a Yes man like Hodgson over Harry.

But even up to 2006 their national team was bottling it. Some things changed shortly after, some of which are obvious but others not so much. England need to make changes to succeed, the problem is that they probably haven't a clue which ones will work.

The problem is that England are a media driven team with no real identity and full of individuals. Spain have a particular style of football as do Germany and Holland. Italy also have traditionally had a way of playing. England dont know who they are or where they are going.

England are basically heavily influenced and strong armed by the gutter English media. There is too much fear there for them to have the courage to build a long term strategy and style ala Spain.

Other nations happily leave in-form players at home but England have a tendency to do the opposite.

It was clear from early on in the second half that Rooney was having a nightmare. Keeping him on the pitch until about 5 mins to go was just plain ridiculous.

He can't be criticized and he can never be dropped.....its a very particular English disease which will come to haunt Man United too.
Reshaping midfield to accommodate him is laughable. Can you imagine the Germans or Italians unbalancing midfield to accommodate a has-been forward? Wouldn't happen in a million years!!

Its hardly fair to point the blame at Wilshere on BBC and ignore the elephant in the room that was Rooney. On 300k and captain of the worst, most gutless England display of all time. A washed up finished Wayne Rooney converted from striker to deep playmaker, unable to control the football or pass 5 yards, getting bossed around the field by Icelandic fishermen.

Total bum, hes totally finished as a player. Couldnt pass the ball 5 yards or control . Surely United will get rid, its sad at this stage

Nonsense. If he could play for Ireland we would roll out the red carpet.

Two elephants in the room during that MOTD post mortem:

Rooney. I guess with Ferdinand there it would be too awkward.

The quality of the Premier League. Shearer touched on it but Lineker - with panicked shouting in his ear piece no doubt - quickly swept it under the carpet.

They weren't blaming Wilshire per say. They wear blaming Roy for bringing him despite him playing little football for the best past of twelve months.

Form is temporary. They needed Milner, Henderson, Barkley , Lallana out there. Not Alli , Dier ,Sterling, and Rashford.
That England team tonight had wrong people in it for a knockout game. Team had too many players who had a few decent games for their clubs so they end up in England team. CRAZY
Like of Milner and Henderson Barkley and Lallana on bench, they got them there FFS.

Cameron was in favour of a remain vote. It made sense that he would step down in order to allow someone who actually supported a leave vote to come in and oversee the process.

One could argue easily that England's best team was mostly on the bench tonight.
