Everyone, cop on. Having petty digs and arguments like this is only going to wreck thread and get it locked.

A bit of civility and courtesy goes a long way on boards, as in life.

If somebody keeps harping on about "the rules" as if theres absolutely no deviating from whatever we're told we're allowed or not allowed do then in my view they are dangerously subsurvient.

We wouldn't have a bit of freedom, rights or be allowed think for ourselves if we all followed the rules so blindly, especially in this case where none of it makes sense to remove a fine piece of art a few days before the 2020 judges come into town.

Actually, the only reason I can think for its removal is the council didnt want the rest of the boring old shop fronts shown up so instead of encouraging the decoration of more shop fronts it was decided it would be cheaper and easier to just remove it and everything is uniform again.

    Except it wasn't removed.

Pretty dodgy IMHO for the rules to say that plants and Claddagh rings aren't ok, but soft-porn is.

I had a similar argument yesterday regarding Sally Longs featuring famous drug addicts on their gable end

So it's only "art" you approve of that should be allowed?

Personally didn't like the ones the council painted over or Sally Longs but if the owners got permission then it should remain.

I never said i dont approve, I was merely pointing out the fact there's a mural of musicians that features some that died from serious drug addictions

What's the significance of their drug habits?

Surely the only relevant information regarding that mural is whether Sally Longs got permission for it?

If Sally Longs got permission then why couldn't Claddagh Jewellers? Or are murals only allowed where most people won't see them?

Had a look at the new blue tonight. Doesn't look too bad and they have retained a smaller advertisement in a decent placement.

    Indeed.

What are the standards. Who decides what is art, and what is just tat.

And this monstrosity - the bit on top looks like the sign-writing was done by a kiddie with a ladder.

(Yes, I know which city councillor has the business underneath.)

They look far more gaudy and unattractive than the Claddagh Jewellers mural. At least the aforementioned mural wasn't as blatant in it's advertising.

Surely the judges aren't going to take into account the 'murals' that are advertising the very competition they're judging?

How long has the banjo busker mural on the side of the pharmacists across the alley from Easons been gone?
I only saw that it was no longer there when I went to check it on the way down to try to photograph the Beanstalk on Saturday. & it's now got a metal sign for the pharmacist over it.

I wondered if it being gone was related to the beanstalk being removed. But it could be gone for a while without me having consciously looked since I rarely go down the alley in question.

I just had been there when it was painted and the gy painting it said something about the paint containing something that protected teh wall beneath it. SO the mural served 2 purposes at least. Beautified the area and protected teh wall. Not sure if that is exactly what he said but it was a mixture of aesthetic and practical reasons anyway.

I thought timing was stupid since I'd heard the 2020 judges were in town last weekend and this did strike me as a good way to forfeit the City of Culture bid.
Would hope that murals like that would be encouraged not frowned on.

Apparently we are getting a new one. At least this is being referred to as a "piece of art".

This looks to be another of his from last year.

Wouldn't it be a nice idea if they took submissions and we could vote for proposed works?
Except of course for how that never seems to work exactly either because of how those votes can be hijacked with social media campaigns to gain votes. :/

I'd love something along the lines of a beanstalk or the likes...

There's actually a perfect blank canvas for that at the moment over the shop beside Tí Cóilis.
It's just an ugly shade of blue at the moment. It would be great if they did something like you say before the 2020 people see it.

And today the council are painting a mural on Taff's building supporting Galway 2020, Pot calling Kettle black springs to mind, how come this can go up and the lovely one on Claddagh Jewelers has to be removed they could have left it there until the judges left

Oh for God sake, hope it's not another similar to the other logo's. How do those kind of murals add to any semblance of cultural richness or diversity to the place?

It doesn't, but it does show the council will bend over and spread those cheeks for that sweet, sweet culture money.

Yore man, Finbarr 24/7 does good stuff at least. I ran into him a couple of months ago, doing the side of Nova on Henry Street.

Actually on the contrary it shows that applying for permission goes a long way. I agree that the beanstalk mural was quite nice, but at the end of the day, if you start applying the rules selectively, it sets a dreadful precedent. So I'm not inclined to throw stones at the City Council over this one.

The Claddagh Jewellers Beanstalk mural lives on in Kinlay Hostel

Just saw that on Twitter and came here to post the same. Their tweet: "we couldn't let the beanstalks die, so we moved them inside where they can't be touched."

    Fantastic move.

    Same as that. Excellent.

Given it's a hostel not many locals will see this. I wonder what visitors will make of it.
