Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes, i know it isn't sexy and a bit too primitive for some purists liking, but what a weapon to have in your armory..Iceland do it to great success..so why don't more teams adopt it?

and while we're at it who were the great exponents of the long throw ?

i seem to remember mick mccarthy as one, sometimes his throw in's were as good as corners

Had this exact discussion with a friend last night. Rory Delap had the best long throw I've seen anyway.

There was a chap who played for Tranmere Rovers about 20 years ago.

David Challinor. He could throw the ball impressive distances. 46.34 metres is his record.

    Rory Delap also

He threw the ball from one side of the pitch to the other in some recorded bit before an FA Cup game.

Amazing Trappatoni never called him up.

He was playing in the Premier League at the time and with the conservative way we played it would have been a great weapon.

Please tell me that wasn't 20 years ago. Would have said 7 or 8.

    Tranmere 1994-2002.

That's between 14 and 22 years ago now! Time flies.

Kenny Samson had a great throw, iirc.

Mortem gamst pedersen used it to great effect at rovers

And then we had Tommy Spurr to do the same in recent years

It's a skillful part of the game

Cannot understand why more players aren't coached this

    Great option for any team

I never heard anyone saying this.
If you have a person on your team that can throw long, you use it.
As you say, its like a corner.

Wasn't there somebody when playing v Stoke kicked it out for a corner rather than a throw in?

    Yeah, Jens Lehmann.

We should be coaching young goalkeepers to hurl flip throws from their penalty areas instead of kicking the ball yards outside their own box.

    Effective*

If the keep doesn't touch it, it's a goal kick. Dzope.

One of Ireland's greatest ever goals was from a long throw in, nothing wrong with it.

Throws in are an underdeveloped part of the game, especially since the offside rule does not apply

Ireland's Megan Campbell is unreal at throw ins. Here's a short video about it from her college.

It really does baffle me that so few teams try to employ this. It's so effective when done right.

It also forces teams to have a really deep defensive line because of the fact you can't be offside. Even if the defence clear the ball out you've still got them pinned right back.

Delap had a ridiculous throw. Not just long, like Gunnarsson does for Iceland, but a really low, flat arc that made it a nightmare to defend. I still have flashbacks to Stoke-Arsenal games :(

Just to point out that he was a pretty poor player apart from the throw-ins

Paul Green was in the bloody squad.

He wasn't that bad.A solid team player and he was certainly better than some of the players Trap picked and he played around 350 games in the premier league and that certainly wasn't all because of the long throw.

Tactically, trap didnt rate any of our midfielders.

Delap didnt have the discipline he wanted but MON would have used Delap to great effect i think.
