France had only given up 4 shots on target in the tournament before tonight (2 of those were penalties). Iceland have had 4 so far tonight.

When you have games against world class opposition such as Iceland, Ireland, Albania and Romania it is a great achievement indeed.

Not to mention a gentlemens agreement before the Swiss game to play out a handy draw.

The French have played practically all tier 3 nations so far. They will be found out against the Germans defensively

No, it doesn't work that way.

The team of Euro 2016 will be the one that wins it.

Dixon to Petit "we better go to an ad break"
    "Why?"
"Cos I wanna disagree with you and we could be here all night."

    Ok off to ad break.

Let him argue FFS, another reason why I hate not having a good RTE stream to watch. I read earlier there was a 25 min discussion with no break. Would not get that anywhere else.

PS great fighting spirit by the Icemen tonight.

Germans will beat the french handy enough I'd say. Anyone with Rami, Evra and sagna in defence isn't winning anything.

Yea remember Ireland drawing 1-1 V Sweden get a throw in with nearly a minute to go and start to piss about meaning as soon as it was taken it was full time instead of one last chance of an attack

If per capita worked for football as for economies: France, one goal per 13m; Iceland, one per 160K. Bravo Iceland! Unforgettable days.

They should give Iceland a replica of the trophy made of Ice. They can enjoy it for a little while at least .

For sure, to provide more protection to the defence. Similar to the Ireland game he will be subbed for a Coman or Martial if they are chasing the game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭Elliott S

    +1

no shame to be defeated by this French team.

Absolutely not! I thought anyway that the Irish team did themselves proud out there, and after last night's game I'm even more convinced of that fact! COYBIG.

On the contrary, I find our current national side to be an anti-Deschamps styled team. Not solid at the back, bombing forward and capable of scoring lots of goals.
Deschamps is a disciple of Jacquet. Solid at the back first with a defense-oriented midfield. But considering the players we have I think we'd be better off playing like Spain or Germany with an attack-minded midfield.

Don't get it wrong. Only a little minority of idiotic communitarianistic pro-Benzema scum were booing him.

True we did not give it 100% but don't forget the three crossbars and the penalty the Swiss could have been given in the last minute.

Well. Deschamps is hesitating. Matuidi & Pogba are more efficient in the 4-2-3-1 with Sissoko on the right. Sissoko can cover them when they bomb forward, he also helps out Sagna defensively and allow him to attack more and finally he enables Griezmann to play higher up the field and combine well with Giroud. This has worked great for the last game and a half (7 goals scored, most of them involving G-G).
The only other alternative is a 4-4-2 diamond with Matuidi down and Payet up. Pogba on his favourite left side and Coman on the right. That would look far too much attacking for Deschamps though.
