So might just keep mine, I say more than 50% people who have already got it will not return it.

It might just be that the other networks are still determining their response or even that the decision makers on such matters had left for the day. Three seem to have been pre-emptive alright but I doubt they'd do such a thing lightly either.. remember, the networks are going to lose out too.

Yea. I doubt the guarantee will be honoured if you refuse a recall. Also there'll be no support, software updates, apps, etc..

It's still early, but by that I mean late. I got a text at 8pm. Maybe Three just happen to be in a position to send the text. It is possible they jumped the gun and issues a recall when Samsung simply wanted them to halt the sales.

Sadly however, someone was reporting they were going to do a recall before hand, they did also say it was less than 0.1 percent of devices affected, but honestly can't believe that if Samsung are halting sales in every region and if it is a global recall, then you can bet it's affecting way more devices.

The reason they are saying it's a small number of devices is the same as any other company really - damage limitation and to reduce consumer "panic" and/or potential litigation depending on the issue/impact.

You can be sure that if they're going for a global recall of their flagship model only days after the release it's significant. A recall is usually only done if the cost of doing so is outweighed by the above factors.

This will cost Samsung big I reckon.. with strong competition from not only Apple in the premium market, but also the likes of HTC and emerging Chinese clones that are almost/just as good for the majority of users (at half the price) they might not recover if decisive action and comms aren't issued.

The problem is that it wasn't Samsung that said it was a small number exactly. It was someone leaking info from Someone at Samsung. It was the same person that said early there was going to be a recall. Hard to think they nailed it on the recall, but lied about the amount of devices affected.

I mean honestly, why says only a small number of devices are affected, but recall them all. I get there has to be some spin on it and obviously they don't want to look the right fools, but when you recall your flagship device. Honesty and being straight forward is the best thing you can do, otherwise your screwing yourself.

    According to this....
When asked for comment, a Samsung spokesperson provided the following statement:

"In response to questions on Galaxy Note7, we are conducting a thorough inspection. We will share the findings as soon as possible. Samsung is fully committed to providing the highest quality products to our consumers."

If the report holds true, the company doesn't plan to announce the results of its investigation until either this weekend or early next week. That delay is said to be a result of discussions Samsung is having with its global carrier partners -- Verizon is said to be one such company Samsung is discussing the matter with, which suggests that the upcoming recall could be a global one. The cynics in us also can't help but note that if Samsung waits to announce the results of its investigation until next week, it might be able to dodge a certain degree of press scrutiny at the IFA tradeshow currently running in Berlin.

It's hard to know. Three however would be a global partner so maybe they jumped the gun or maybe they are being over-cautious. Either way, I can't see potentially days of online speculation and rumour combined with sales freezes doing anything to help matters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,315 ✭✭✭dan786

Why are they going ahead with China launch, when they will sell millions there on Day 1, biggest market for them in the world. I would have thought that would be the first place where they halt the sales due to the size of the market.

That official statement was given earlier regarding the delay's, I don't think we have heard anything official from Samsung regarding the recall.

Yeah.. a lot of sites are saying that a recall MAY be imminent but nothing certain yet.. I think though they'll have to comment on the speculation quickly if they plan to salvage it.

There's probably also a time difference and strategy planning to allow for, but the longer rumors and speculation circulate, the more damage will be done.

It'll be interesting to see what Three say tomorrow if they're going to be contacting people as reported earlier.

Based on what people are saying on XDA regarding CPW, and from what Three have said. It's pretty much official that Samsung are doing a recall, and those retailers were the first to react.

had a play with the gear vr on my mates note 7 the other day (the one that didn't overheat), very impressed (compared to my google cardboard on my note 3 at least), did some space exploration thing and a rollercoaster and of course the obligatory VR POV porn (for science, obviously) which was, er...interesting. :)

    oops! :o

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/1/12759912/samsung-galaxy-note-7-recall
Samsung is preparing to announce a massive and global recall of its brand new Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency. The Korea Herald also reported earlier that Samsung is "considering" a recall. The drastic and unprecedented step would be a direct result of Samsung's ongoing investigation into reports that the Note 7's battery has exploded while charging, and Samsung could announce a recall as soon as this coming weekend. Just yesterday, it was reported that Samsung had decided to delay Note 7 shipments while investigating the claims, and it would appear that the company might've found a serious cause for concern. This has yet to be officially confirmed, but The Verge has reached out to Samsung and all major US mobile operators for comment.

Ah lads dont say that Im really looking forward to this phone :(

It was to be my first Note phone. I have wanted one since the original and have never got one as my upgrade time fell when it was always 6 months old. Now I have the chance to buy it and this happens!

I would really love to see this phone rise from the ashes (Excuse the pun).

Have not heard anything yet from networks as to how to get the refund. I am not sending back at my own expenses etc when I paid unlocking on then and have cases on the way.

I hope they can be brought to a store and returned there but doubt it as were sold online.

Samsungs stock prices took a sharp drop yesterday.

Samsung really needed to address the issue though. Im glad they did and have done the way they are rather than a case by case basis.

They are worrying more about their customers (and long term profits) rather than the current profits. This is a bold move from them but it shows they actually do care.

    Official Samsung statement.

    https://news.samsung.com/global/statement-on-galaxy-note7

In short, they will offer voluntary replacements in the coming weeks and are still working out what that process will be. No mention of any compensation or freebies, yet anyway.

I got mine yesterday, and I'm delighted with it so far, it's a fantastic phone.

I've charged it twice so far, once from the initial 60% charge it came with up to 100% with Fast Charge enabled, and the second time was overnight from about 18% up to 100% with fast charge disabled.

The phone didn't even get noticeably warm either time. I also tried out GearVR for a while and the phone barely got warm from that, whereas other people report their phone getting very hot from either charging or normal use.

So personally, I probably will swap mine when they're available, but I'm happy enough to keep using it more or less normally for the moment. But I will keep Fast Charge disabled and keep an eye on temperature when charging.

Until Samsung release more details on the cause, the most likely cause is battery overheating. So I would suggest that anybody who intends to keep using the phone keep an eye on temperature when charging, and if the phone starts getting hot to stop charging and switch it off.

The fact that they're issuing a recall indicates it's a widespread serious issue. I value my life a lot more than a smartphone. The fact that people are willing to hold onto them is crazy. Just because your battery hasn't gotten noticeably warm doesn't mean it won't happen overnight some night while you are sleeping. I wouldn't be risking it

True also lipo batteries will expand and blow not heat up and catch fire.

I wouldn't be using the phone if there is a global recall I'd turn the phone off and use another if available better safe than sorry, not enough details about the actual cause so I'd air on the side of caution.

They typically expand and blow because of overheating, which can cause a runaway reaction in the cell. The main exception would be a structural failure or internal short (i.e. mashing it with a hammer). Given that Samsung have announced a voluntary exchange rather than a mandatory recall, the issue is almost certainly a flaw in the protection against overheating.

So far they have only announced that there will be a voluntary replacement program, not a global recall. I agree caution is definitely warranted though.

The article states that they will offer voluntary replacements, but they dont state that you have to bring it back to stay within your warranty or the like. It doesnt say you HAVE to send it back.

I would still obviously and wouldnt recommend anyone doesnt send it back

They should have done the press release 24 hours ago about the 'voluntary exchange' before letting the global recall gain legs.

They can't be that bad at PR, so I'm guessing the voluntary exchange is actually just their public word on it, and carriers will be doing a mandatory recall as per samsungs actual wishes.

Hopefully I'll be able to get myself a nice knocked down price version :D

I have seen this happen. A Friend of mine came Airsofting with me one day. It was a hot day and he left a box of Lipo batteries sitting on the back window of his car.

went to get them an hour later and three of the seven had exploded in the box. burnt a hole in the box and charred the soft boot cover also.

    Scary stuff!

Good old Sammy. I was looking forward to the Note 7, but they are really making me lose faith.

Firstly not releasing the Note 5 here was bizarre, then the S6 Edge+ had to wait for 6 months to get Marshmallow, now this. For such a behemoth, they make a lot of stupid mistakes.

ah that's the kind of ambiguous wording they were going for! It means in 6 months when someone is talking about this debacle, someone can say hey.. that was only a 'voluntary' recall.. They know all the tricks :D

Indeed.. I'd read that as damage control but agree with others that you'd be mad to hold onto the phone at this point and take the chance given the nature of the problem

reminds me of the apple half moon thing. They could identify what serial numbers were affected and had a limited recall. I assume samsung can do similar and arent doing a partial recall due to the scale of the problem.

I rang them myself to get an update and was told Samsung are doing a recall, and that I would get a call sometime today with information on how to return the device.

I hope Three don't start asking people to post them back, and ask them to bring it to the nearest store.

Was just thinking what would happen if it exploded in the vr headset? I haven't put my sim in mine yet but charged it twice. Only went down 9% in about 12 hours with no cell signal or actual phone use. Suppose that isn't bad with always on display on. No word from Vodafone yet. Really like this phone and spent 50 euro on an otterbox (still hasn't arrived) so torn what to do with it. Will hold on to Z5 premium for the time been.

I called Samsung support and they informed me that investigations are still ongoing and there is no confirmation that EU or UK devices are affected.

As soon as the investigation is completed they will make an announcement and to keep an eye on the Samsung website etc.

So, really not very much use bothering with calling that number.

Not another note, the Galaxy S4 had an expanding battery problem a few years ago that required a FOC replacement from Samsung. However, that was a simple battery replacement.
Too bad they've gone down the iphone route and decided to seal in the battery on the Note 7.

I had spare batteries on the Note 3 and Note 4. If the battery died i would simply swap battery and be back to 100% in 30 seconds. Then place the other battery in a charger while still working away on the phone.
No can do on this yoke though.

Ah but now when the battery wears enough to require more frequent charging, you're likely to buy a whole new phone or pay to get the battery replaced - rather than buying a genuine battery on eBay for €20, popping it in yourself, and extending the life of the phone by another 2 years

Just received another text from 3. It says call a number to arrange return of the phone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,624 ✭✭✭Thor

Just off the phone with Three.

They said that Samsung wanted all the devices back and to give a full refund. No mention on replacements, but he did say we will get a phone call next week with an update.

He did want me to registered post it back, but I asked if I could return it to a store, and he put me on hold for a minute and found out that yes we can bring them into a store to return them.

I've already shut mine down and wiped it, so going to wait a day or so and see what Samsung will be doing themselves.

    Posted this on another thread:

I was pretty god man done with this today im due my baby very very soon i live in cork my husband has been located in galway for work . So i need the phone and i need it to be working. So anyway fast forward from last night rang customer care at 8 am before going to work . Phone got picked up by some very very sleepy agent. He said yeah sure no bother drive out to store give phone back including accessories i was provided (vr gear) and i should be able to get refund or another phone if i wish. I was thinking to myself well done three finally able to deal with issues (this is not first time this has happened to me ) finished work at 1.3o pm and i was on my way to store smiling that im gonna get phone that works and wont have to deal with this mess. Walked in store told my story guy said first time he heard about this then he disappeared for like 10 minutes came out and said there os docket u need to return phone to online store. Whrn i asked address he said again i must dial 1913 ( to report why and what im sending back and to get adress) i said what about the fact i need phone because i dont have another phone to use as i sold my last one due to this upgrade and .... i was told .... i dont know. back to car i went 9 months pregnant not easy waddling about. Lady on phone said she doesnt know and that i must waot for call back . Why they just dont take phones back instore as this is causing me allready unneeded hassle is beyond me . It would me rather easier to pop in store get replacement and forget about this. As i can see it can take weeks now before this is sorted . By the time we all get call backs and adresses to post it back then waiting on new phones its redicilous.

Right , just rang them there.

Was told I can bring it back to a store and get a full refund. In addition to that I can keep the VR headset. They just need the phone with the box/accessories. Oh and I was also told I they will compensate me for the unlocking as well.

Might pop in later this evening.

I was on to three and they told me to send it by post. I can't bring it to the shop because it was bought online. They gave me a case number and address to send it to. I have to send it registered post and they will refund any postal costs. It's all wrapped up and ready to go.

be alot in conflicting info , some people are saying they have been told to post the phone back only, while other can bring the in store.

I for one am going to wait this out for a bit, and deal directly with Samsung....from the samsung site
“Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.
“To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note7.
For customers who already have Galaxy Note7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks. For more information customers need to contact the customer service team on 016950367.
We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause in the market but this is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers. We are working closely with our partners to ensure the replacement experience is as convenient and efficient as possible.”

Only 35 cases globally so far.... gonna talk to samsung and see how they are going to arrange replacements.
