Deferring a course in NUIG

I have been offered a masters in NUIG, but for reasons beyond my control I can't accept. I want to defer but was told NUIG don't accept deferrals, and that I have to re-apply next year hope to be offered it again. Has anyone had this experience? Im afraid I won't be offered it again next year. Thanks
