When I was 21 ( 6'2" and a beard and never asked for ID )I brought a trolly of shopping to the till in tesco
Yer wan beeped everything through and then asked for ID for the 4 cans I was buying. Told her I didn't have id cos I'm 21 and no one ever asks for ID
She got really cross when I said if I couldn't have the beer I didn't want any of the items ID get them in dunnes

Got stung similarly in the US when buying booze for a 4th July party. 4 of us went into the shop, all well past 21, but one didn't have ID. Left all the booze at the till and person without ID in the car at next shop. Have read it's happening a lot over here now also.

The US is nuts for ID checks. Some bars will check your ID no matter how old you are. I have been checked in my 40s!

When I lived there -if the checkout person in my local supermarket wass underage they could not physically touch any booze you are buying and ask you to scan it for them.

Maybe if they upped the age for drinking and entry to pubs/nightclubs to 21 it might stop the excessive drinking here in Ireland because people would be a bit more mature by then one would imagine.

Although I feel a bit of a hypocrite saying this because I was in pubs myself at 16, only difference was back then 5 quid would be all we had in our pocket and a pint or 2 of dishwater (Smithwicks) did us for the night.

Most nightclubs are over 21s don't see how that would make it more mature don't see the harm in teenagers drinking in pubs with their parents

I did some as a mystery shopper, it was me and a younger friend went in to check if they'd sell me alcohol when she didn't have ID.

Works really well in the USA, underage people still get blotto over there.

Why don't we try the European model where there is very little restriction on the sale of alcohol? Don't see as much trouble in Europe with alcohol, once you stay away from the Irish/UK resorts.

This would require giving Irish teenagers something to do with their evenings other than hanging around supermarkets and shopping centres waiting to turn 18 so they can they join their parents and older siblings in the pub.
