    Aren't there too many variables to really make good comparisons?

    The route changes quite a bit. Even if they tend to visit the same spots, the start/finish spots and stage length are almost always different. Even averaged over the whole tour it's a bit too much variation to balance out.

    Add to that equipment changes and tactics too...

    I think it's one of those statistics that seems important because it's easy to measure and understand...but in reality doesn't tell you much.
