Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

After seeing a documentary on the England worst XI, who would fit in Ireland's worst XI, maybe Paul Green

Green would be nowhere near our worst 11. Neither would Mcshane but I'm sure he'll get a lot of mentions here..

    Centre midfield.

    Joey Lapira.

Paul Butler centre back. Paddy Kenny in goal?

You'll be looking at a load of 1 or 2 cap wonders really.

Worst XI with 10+ caps would be interesting

    Of all time?

Sure there's nobody posting here who'd be able to give a proper opinion of players who played for the ROI from the 50s to the 80s.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Is the 80s really some dim and fabled time, which maybe wasn't even real?

Nobody here can pass any opinion on Mark Kelly, Peter Eccles or Pierce O'Leary?

Anyway, my worst Ireland XI would have Gary Breen in goals. I don't care what the song says.

"Who is your worst Republic of Ireland XI of all time"?

    You mean...

Who would be in your worst Republic of Ireland team of all time?

My choice is the current lot. We have no class players, just journeymen.

    Jon Macken.

Was Manchester City's record signing at the time he was capped I believe.

Anyone who competed in Euro 2012. Both at qualifying and the finals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,787 ✭✭✭Benimar

For those with 10+ caps I'll throw in Nicky Colgan and Alan Lee.

Connor Sammon is lucky he only has 9 caps :)

Yeah we were in so many Euros before that and regularly winning them so those that qualified were terrible.

I came across the Matt Le Tissier 100 club episode on sky sports the other day. I was amazed how many of his goals were assisted by Kenna or at least involved him in the build up. Theres plenty of filler players much more worthy of a spot than Kenna.

I imagine the actual worst team will be full of 1 cappers.

The worst team to amass the most caps would be an interesting team to see

    Edit

Or the worst team to amass under say 50 caps

In terms of a collective team unit, rather than the fourteen
individual players, it's hard to argue against that group on that inglorious night.

    A team of Gary Breens!

Hard to look past Simon Cox and Conor Sammon.

I mean, just not international players.

Pierce O'Leary was the usual one identified in worst player pub discussions back in the days before the internet. A whole career based on being the brother of the very fine David.

Alex Bruce has to be in there, absolute poison!

McGeady. A man who bluffed his way through an international career and has been pretty terrible throughout

Conor Sammon and Caleb Folan get my starting CFs with Daryl Murphy running both close, all three have failed to score for us too.

There's a heap of strikers we've had worse that Morrison.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Bollocks.

85 caps for us. Without his goals in this campaign we wouldn't have been in France.

He's been incredibly frustrating throughout his career and his form has noticeably dipped in the past two years. But he shouldn't be anywhere near this discussion.

He got that many caps because the other options werent any better.

He scored 9 goals in 36 appearences for us, not world class by any means but not deserving of mention in this thread.

Shane Long has a similar strike rate for Ireland as a comparison.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Surprised there's been no mention of Liam Miller yet...
To my eyes, the worst I've seen don a green jersey, he was dire. He's been living off the back of his Man United days

Had many fine games for Ireland

Second top scorer in the 2006 campaign; scored away to Switzerland and Israel.

Would have been vital goals had Kerr not insisted on sitting back on every lead. Shouldn't be included I think.
