When Deschamps changed his talismanic 4-3-3 into a 4-2-3-1 with Coman in the second half of our game against Ireland, he found a team with a better balance, with Griezmann in his favourite position uptop just right behind Giroud and Payet higher up the field in a kinda number 10 role just behind Giroud-Griezmann. It worked well against you. Worked great against Iceland. Started great vs Germany (for 10 min). Then Payet struggled because we weren't seeing the ball at all and he couldn't find his defending position. But in the second half, with a couple of adjustments (and also thanks to the unexpected 45+! min goal), it worked OK. Deschamps knew we'd have the control of the ball vs Portugal so he kept his "new" 4-2-3-1. Then, Sissoko gained his position thanks to his game vs Germany. he never disappoints with Les Bleus and would have been MOM had we won tonight.

It's easy to say now it was a mistake. We had many opportunities to score. We didn't. C'est la vie.

If I was to blame Deschamps, I'd just say he failed to adapt to Santos unexpected audacity when he brought in Eder. It made the whole team play higher, gave them a pivotal point upfront, when they were going backwards and backwards...

I'd forgotten that Portugal had finished 3rd in their group, they'd have gone home after the group stage in the old format.

Under the old format Hungary wouldn't have made it to the tournament, and thus their group, so we can't know how it would have gone.

The mental gymnastics to belittle their achievement is petty imo. 'They finished third in their group', 'they didn't win many games in 90 minutes' etc.

Every team that entered the tournament knew the rules and how it all worked. Bottom line is they made it through the tournament unbeaten and won it fair and square.

I doubt he'll think he's won anything as he wasn't on the pitch for 100 minutes of the game.

I thought the tournament was extended? now its only 100 mins. What happens the qualifiers and group games etc from now on have they been scraped?

You are suffering from Nostalgia or else you don't watch enough football

    Suarez
    Neymar
    Messi
    Augero
    James Rodriguez
    Douglas Costa
    Bale

All skillfull risk takers with end product. There is many more of these types of players across Europe

Apart from bale none of those are European which was what I said initially.

You're obviously trolling so back to the mat in Stu's dungeon with you...

Anyway, as for the game, I haven't seen it mentioned that Portugal's 3 substitutes combined for the goal. You'd have to say the game was won and lost with the subs. France's were terrible. Payet coming off so early was a big mistake I thought, he wasn't having a great game but had shown a couple of times in the tournament already that he had the ability to pull something out of the bag.

You're aware we're under state of emergency for about 8 months now?

They said beforehand they wanted the Eiffel Tower & Champs Elysees free (no celebration a la WC '98 even if we'd won, avenue Foch was the secured way to celebrate, don't know what's planned for the Portuguese).

They don't want to encourage any mass celebrations on the streets that would be un-policable. There was going to be no French parade tomorrow as well.

They play in Europe, sorry. Here's some Europeans

    Bale
    Ineista
    Hazard
    Ronaldo
    Lewondowski

Equal to the players you mentioned from the 00s.

There was one actually. But Avenue Foch, easier to secure than Champs Elysees.

The 24 team format meant Portugal got through with three points - that's just wrong whatever one thinks about the team or any of their players.

Get back to 16 (yeah yeah!)

They won the competition that was layed out to begrudge that is just being very closed minded.

Should it have been 4 or 8 or 16 teams. If you win whats put in front of you you win, amd any silly bias doesnt compute to the euros considering the differnt changes to the structure over the years

Actually the Portuguese are celebrating nicely on the Champs Elysees. But some troublemakers (French scums and maybe foreign scums too) came to fight the police, a mad man managed to break through the police barriers with his car and drove into the crowd. Hopefully there's no one injured...

Jeez... Fortunately, nothing was planned on the Champs Elysees. Could have turned into a bloodbath...

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,806 ✭✭✭corny

I'm not a Ronaldo basher but Portugal were better with a decent target man who made use of himself physically. Eder played really well.

Ronaldo (probably because he's suffering from a chronic injury) has been ambling around undermining the work others were putting in. Blessing in disguise he left the field tbf. Fair play to him for playing the captains role from the bench though. I'm sure some of the younger lads were encouraged by his words.

Best game i think i've ever seen Nani play btw. No bull**** at all from him. Even knocked Sissoko on his arse with a good shoulder. Thought i was seeing things!

Koscielny got booked for Eder's handball meaning Koscielny could not foul him in the run-up to Eder scoring otherwise he would have been sent off.

Lads on RTE were talking the same nonsense. Apparently if Koscielny wasn't booked for that hand ball he would have made a better effort to stop Eder in the lead up to the goal. Flimsy isn't the word.

Obviously Umtiti was struck by the same affliction Koscielny was because he made no effort to block down Eder either. Must have been standing in solidarity with Koscielny.

oh right he let him run instead of doing a cynical foul...ah it is a bit of leap to be honest...the last defender shoudl have got closer and made sure he hit the ball to the right of the goal but that was all i saw poor defending from the last defender

Brady pointed that out as well. Umtiti did nothing to bail his centre back partner out of trouble.

Koscielny didnt handle it to be fair to him and the ref awarded Portugal a free. Whether rightly or wrongly though, France had plenty of chances to clear the resulting ball and they didnt. Not one player closed down the scorer. he was allowed have a pop from 35 yards. Goalie should have done better too.

Three points has nothing to do with it. If Iceland drew with Austria a team from that group would still finish 2nd with three points. Under the old format it was possible to progress with two points.

To be fair I'm not sure Koscielny would have been able to do anything whether he was booked or not, Eder was doing that from the minute he came on, gave portugal a very decent physical presence up there.

Looking at the replay,it looked like Koscielny tried to get close but Eder just gave him a good old fashioned shoulder and couldn't make the challenge as a result...some finish.

Kos was definitely hampered by yellow. A professional foul and a card would have been standard for that goal

Bitterness from L'equipe with those ratings. Patricio had one or 2 good saves but all stuff you'd expect him to deal with. A 5 for Fonte is ridiculous. Making it look like it was a miraculous goalkeeping display that stopped them winning rather than their own inadequacy.

I actually think he's right. Kids are not out playing all day. All protected by their parents from imaginary paedophiles and playing FIFA on Xbox.

As a result the talent pool is less and the players only play with organised teams that are coached.

You can see the impact. Look how Brazil play compared to their teams of the past.

It's changing the game and there will be less natural flair players in the future.

I'm the same age as some of the players on the field last night and I played a lot on the streets and it didn't do me any good. And anyway if somebody prefers playing the X-Box to be out playing football then they probably weren't going to be much good anyway so are no loss to the game.

sure Dunphy once said in order to have a great team you needed a "dictatorship and poverty" which is complete and utter bollox.

You can't get enough good coaching in any sport.

This flair thing isnt really looking at the big picture. Absolutely nothing to do with kids not playing on the streets or not having enough 'flair'. It's not being 'coached out'. It's just not effective. Players know how to defend against it thanks to advances in coaching. The sport won't regress for the sake of entertainment. Being skillful alone isn't enough anymore.
