Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anti-Racism Network Ireland and MASI are calling this demo to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement opposing racialised violence and discrimination against Black people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

I'd have thought Irish people would sympathise with innocent civilians being shot dead by armed police but clearly some on here have short/selective memories...

I think he's alluding to the Northern Ireland conflict and the treatment of Nationalists by the RUC and British Army (Bloody Sunday)

As for the Blm march no doubt it will be the usual student grant types on it. The last time I was in Dublin there must have been an anti Israeli March on as a few student types got on the bus with Palestinian flags chanting plo...plo

    I could hardly stop laughing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,400 ✭✭✭lukesmom

It's not our fight so why are idiots marching? We have enough to be opposed to in Ireland without jumping on every bloody bandwagon. How many black people were gunned down by an garda siochana this year? None.. so go away with your March. Empty vessels and all that.

In Ireland people have been shot by policy plenty of times. I never said recently.

Good job trying to be pedantic though, bravo.

"Do you not get it, lads? The Irish are the blacks of Europe. And Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland. And the Northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin. So say it once and say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud."

No, it was because they were Irish. So as a nation we have a national history which can empathise with minorities being systematically targeted by armed agents of the state.

But sure it's more important to pretend racism isn't still a real problem and Ireland never experienced violent oppression and indiscriminate attacks from armed occupiers because "feck them leftie eejits and their notions".

    Showing solidarity isn't protesting.

When the LGBT community in Ireland held shows of solidarity after the shooting in Orlando were you up in arms about that too?

    More whites are shot though.

You are correct, 50.4% of people killed by police white while 47.6% were minorities (2% unknown)
What you are forgetting/choose to ignore is that 62.6% of population is White while 37.4% are Minorities - so proportionally the number of minorities killed is very high
Especially when you look at unarmed people killed by police, it goes to 34.3% White and 62.7% Minorities (3% unknown)

Quite a large section of Irish and British black people seem to take 90% of their cultural influences from America.

Same with whites too though. We all get bombarded with American culture to the point that we seem to end up importing what they consider offensive based on their own history and replacing our own cultural mores with it - case in point, a KFC ad in Australia that caused outrage in the US, but to the Australians it was perfectly innocuous, not having had the same history as the US did.

    Still got pulled though.

If it weren't for protests like this, people would think it's open season for genocide on black people.

No we don't. And you don't get to decide it either. If anything, it is the history of the majority that was systematically targeted on the island of Ireland that has a historical precedent. Irish people in Ireland are not a minority group.

It is mind boggling the social justice masturbation going on. It must be like watching porn to you people. Any black person or gay person killed even if the ethnicity or sexuality has nothing to do with it, is straight into the spank bank.

Plenty of oppression of local Irish people going on by people like you. WHy not show solidarity with them? Or is because they are white that you won't? Why be so racist?

And are you going to leave out the Crime figures ? Especially Violent crimes. You can use statistics to prove anything.

I'll be amazed if Coppinger doesn't rock up at this with her menagerie of claim and complain whingers and hijack the front row with a massive AAA banner.

I have nothing to do with this march and won't be attending but the organisers aren't claiming that the Gardaí have killed any black people. It's being organised by and for people who want to make a demonstration of support for black people in the US. It's the same as when people here demonstrated against apartheid South Africa in the 80s. Nothing to do with us here doesn't mean that something isn't wrong and that people in other countries should ignore it.

Using their logic the eastern European countries are still part of the USSR

We weren't different countries though, our Constitution enshrined that we had a territorial claim over the 6 counties.
    1. The national territory consists of the whole island of Ireland, its islands and the territorial seas.

    2. Pending the re-integration of the national territory, and without prejudice to the right of the Parliament and Government established by this Constitution to exercise jurisdiction over the whole of that territory, the laws enacted by that Parliament shall have the like area and extent of application as the laws of Saorstát Éireann and the like extra-territorial effect.

No. It's in relation to the fact that Irish were more likely to be shot for being Irish and in America Black people are targetted by the police. Solidarity between victims of racism.
