The Irish Defence forces are set to lay siege on Thurles today

The Third Infantry Battalion is conducting a Military Operations in Urban Terrain exercise in the Mid Tipp town involving up to 150 personnel.

Their target is to secure the Munster Hotel in the Mid Tipp town from armed elements and soldiers will be engaged in a variety of exercises including battle preparation, urban combat techniques. casualty evacuation and prisoner handling.

Its part of a week long operation with the remainder taking place in Fort Davis in Cork and concluding with an extraction by the Naval service on Friday!!

Over the weekend sailors were practicing on the firing range as they took part in a Range Managers Course in Kilcoran in Tipperary.

Sometimes I wonder how realistic MOUT training really is; I recall seeing one training location that had been sanitised of all broken glass, broken timber, anything remotely sharp, no exposed water or gas mains, no wrecked cars, no fires, no corpses (pretend!), no wrecked military vehicles, no loose ordnance,etc....there was no capacity or allowance to build defences by the defenders and no ordnance heavier than a grenade allowed to the attackers. It was all a bit of a cod, really.
