Has anyone recently done a booze cruise to France?

I just did a quick search looking at Irish Ferries prices and it costs roughly €240 & I should get 8 hours ashore which is more than enough time to hit a supermarket.

Do any other ferry companies land in Cherbourg?

Hopefully you can work around the dates. It does look lovely!

A tip for anyone traveling over this year. Most if not all of the petrol stations where you pay at the pump have a high pre-authorization amount most are over €100 that will take the guts of a week to get back to your account so where possible either pay at the kiosk on the way out or in the shop.

I’ve been caught at one which pre-authorized €150 and took 2 weeks to return to my account. 2 or 3 fills and it would eat into your spending money significantly.

Fill at any of the e.le.clerc hypermarkets and you have the choice of pump or kiosk payment. Often if you pay at kiosk and show receipt from market you get a gift or discount of a few cents

    Hi Fred,

Over the weekend, we bought a case of 12 bottles of wine for €143.
This is approx €12 / bottle.

The same wine (or as close as I could find) on Leclercs website was €4 / bottle.
    That's €48 for the 12 bottles.

We're not big drinkers but we do enjoy a wine on Saturday night. We'd use a few bottles more at Christmas. Then we'd always bring a bottle going to friends for dinner.

Even at that very low rate, there must be a saving to make by taking a ferry to Cherbourg on a Monday. Arriving on Tuesday for 8 hours & hitting Leclerc at the top of the hill. Buying 100 - 150 bottles. Get back on ferry and get home on Wednesday.

The savings would cover the cost of the ferry, leave plenty of money in my pocket, and give me plenty of undisturbed time to read a few books.

This is a trip i have thought of doing too. I went on holidays to France last summer. I spent about 250 euros on wine to bring home in the car. I reckon that same wine would have cost about 850 here. If one had interest from a few people it could be really worth one's while. But if you were taking 2 days off work, you'd have to factor that into the calculations also.

I've been to Roscoff & there is very little there.

Cherbourg is much better. It has a Leclerc & maybe an Auchan. These Supermarché are about 15 mins drive from Port, on a decent road.

It would be a mini holiday or cruise in itself.

I'd love the peace & the reading time. It wouldn't be a "cost" for me. I'd love it.

What happens if you are stopped by Customs & Excise on the way back?

As Fred said, Customs would not be the slightest bit interested in me at all. Provided, it is not for resale.

It's illegal to travel with kids in the roof box.
If you want to chance it however you could try http://www.roofbox.ie/
    :)

I assume you live in Louth but if you happen to now be living near Stillorgan there's a motor factor/bike shop beside the Aroma Chinese which rents out roof boxes. Check out https://stillorgancyclesmotorstop.com

I rented once and it might actually be worth buying a secondhand one of you think you might use it again. The cost of the rental wasn’t much less than buying one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,933 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

worth buying one, we're still using the Halfords box we bought when we started going to France 10 years ago; and you'd have no trouble selling it on if you're no longer using it.

I've been thinking about being a roof box as well : the concern my wife always raises is "where would you store it during the year?"
What do people do with them when not in us? Not sure if would fit through the attic hatch.

It took a few minutes to translate this (you want to be a roof box :D) but I keep mine on a large shelf in my shed. It's handy for keeping other summer hols equipment also if space is tight.

Depending on the size of it, it might fit under the stairs and it can hold winter clothes during the summer and summer clothes during the winter. This also depends on the size of your accommodation also. Trying to hide a roof box in a one bed studio might not be practical.

We have done both - Roscoff is not far from Morlaix (30mins from the port) where there are several different Hypermarche (Intermarche, Leclerc, Casino) as well as another large Leclerc in St Pol de Leon, just 10 mins from the port.

Cherbourg has all the big stores only 5 or 10 mins from the port - including a huge Carrefour.

Of the 2, Cherbourg is probably easier to get around and has greater choice given the time. But I like Roscoff as you can park up and go for a nice lunch before getting back on the boat!

That's not true. EU Limits are for personal use and is 90 litres for Wine and 60 litres for Sparkling wine.

They do random stops but do not overly enforce as far as I have seen.
