The last 2 paragraphs are copied directly. I would imagine last one is a typo, it's probably the remains from previous offer.

Right next question, we have the option of staying for 3 nights in Toulousse or Carcasonne on the way home ( we like to break the journey up).  Neither are a million miles from wehre we are staying but as we have 3 nights to play with has anyone stayed in either and suggest 2 nights in one and 1 in the other etc?

Haven't stayed overnight in either, but did take a break this year in Carcasonne.
I think it would be well worth a full day there but you'd need to find something else apart from the old town for the other 2 days.
We looked into stopping in Toulouse a couple of years ago and do one of the ESA or Airbus tours, but I think we were too late to book one of the English tours and had to give it a miss. Seems like there's more to do around Toulouse.

I'm not sure when you're thinking of but in Carcassonne, for Bastille Day, they put on the most amazing firework display. If you wanted to be there for that, you'd probably need to book accommodation quite early & not plan on needing to drive before or after! It's very popular & traffic backs up really quickly & takes ages to disperse. Sometimes hours.

    Hi folk's,
Looking to fly Ryanair to nante next July and hire a car. Is it cheaper to book car rental via Ryanair or book direct?
    Thanks,
    Mick

We used Sixt in Nantes and it was hassle-free. Car hire is quite expensive in France, esp for the seven-seaters.

Use the skyscanner site/app and you can save the search for periodically checking the prices...

Looking for recommendation on a hotel to stop off on the way down from Roscoff to La Sirene next year for a night. It would be Sunday July 15th but as that would be Bastille weekend, would like to get the booking in early.

I'm thinking somewhere around La Rochelle - Bordeaux.

Somewhere with plenty of parking, easy to get to / from motorway.
    Cheers.

Pullman Hotel Bordeaux Lac, have used it 3 times on the way down to Aloha, nice rooms, safe parking, good Breakfast and a Coutepaille opposite for dinner.

  • Registered Users Posts: 283 ✭✭mikerd4

The pullman aint cheap, well not if you have a family of 4. Im guessing it depends what you want ie just a bed for the night or something more. Last year we stayed at a chateau guest house north of bordeaux for a night. It was superb and being on a vineyard they sold their own wine which was superb

We went to Le Littoral in June/July last, early June might be quieter.

It’s a great site with great facilities, but it’s not our scene, we heard it was busy but didn’t really understand what busy meant.

There was a high proportion of Irish when we were there, who were in the bar most nights and ate in the on-site restaurant, so It depends on what you want from a campsite holiday really, we like to get up early and do our own thing and then relax on the deck when the kids go down at night, Le Littoral is more lie-ins and late nights with organised entertainment till late. There were kids roaming around the site at all hours too while their parents were at the bar.

Some of the Irish we met didn’t leave the site during their visit, except for tours organised by Le Littoral to local tourist sites, so if you don’t plan to leave the site while you are there, and like your entertainment laid on, then you will like it.

Don’t get me wrong it’s a great site, but we found we had to avoid the bar and on-site entertainment to enjoy the holiday. Every day would have been the same otherwise, kids club, pool, disco, show, bar, when removed from the cycle of on-site entertainment, our 2 kids much preferred the picnics, bike rides and day trips too.

We've done 3 years in France (albeit early to mid June), in Eurocamp sites, and I'm glad to say that we've never seen the usual getting locked at the bar that you see at home, in fact I'm always amazed at how civilised and sober it all is. And no, I'm not a teetotaller, we just have our drinks on the deck when kids are in bed!!

I honestly don't think I've seen a single "drunk" person on a campsite in 8-9 years of going. Sure people go to the bar or entertainment area (often one and the same) after dinner to socialise with other holiday makers but it's usually for an hour or max two and then home to the mobile. The campsites I've been to all shut down at 11:00 or 11:30 latest (with the exception of La Reserve who have a Luna Bar aimed at the older teens where they hang out, play pool and drink a few beers from 10:30 until 12:30) and I've never been kept awake by rowdy neighbours or teens making noise as they head back to their mobiles etc. Maybe we've been lucky.

Have to agree. Charmettes did run a late bar but never saw anyone drunk. Never stayed beyond a 11 though.

Drink is the last thing on my mind when on the holidays, it's more about spending time and doing as much as possible with the kids.

Had the pleasure of seeing a group of rowdy French teenagers evicted from a campsite this year for their late night antics. They were very noisy late at night even after being asked to be quiet. Following numerous complaints they were woken to their hangovers at 11am and told to leave by campsite security. And that was that !

Le Bois Masson was full of French people in August. They were very loud in general, even after 11pm. The concept of go easy and have some consideration seemed to be lost on them!

Folks, anyone have any opinion on the current Ryanair Fiasco? I had been seriously considering them for our trip next year as they get us closer to our destination and are about 200 euros cheaper than Aer Lingus.

We're not travelling till mid june, I'm inclined to think it'll be well blown over by then, but figured it's no harm to gauge opinions here.

I think it'll be well blown over by then. The scheduling conflict is for this year only as they are fitting 12months holidays into a 9 month period. After this is sorted, you can bet your bottom dollar they won't make the same mistake again. In fact they have already taken pre-emtpive measures to ensure as such by reducing the schedule.

As a side note, Ryanair seems to have stopped publishing the daily cancellation list on their website. The only information on it now (and all that the media is reporting) is the winter cancellations just announced.

I worked on that campsite many moons ago. It's the reason I stayed on le bois dormant this year, it really is much quiter than across the road.

Anyone been to Le Littoral campsite in Vendee? Thinking of going in early June with Yelloh!, would love some feedback from people who have stayed there before.
    Thanks

We stayed in Le Littoral for a week this year - going back for 2 weeks next year. It felt like a very safe campsite, the kids club was campsite run and really was very good! The restaurant was lovely and there was a great cycle path running into Les Sables - a decent enough cycle but the most beautiful beach! Not the most atmospheric bar ever but as we usually only stayed long enough to see whatever was on for the kids it didn't matter much. There were a lot of Irish when we were there but the kids made loads of friends.

Does anyone know the official date Irish Ferries will be allowing bookings on the new Dublin - Cherbourg July/Aug 2018 routes?

Maybe this weekend after the Late Late Show reveal of the new ship name?
It gives a vague 'Released October 2017' on their website.

Irish Ferries told me "mid August" so worth keeping an eye out!

Has Dublin-Cherbourg been confirmed for the new ship? That's news to me! Good news :)

Whenever I was going to put out the rubbish, there was usually 40%+ irish cars on my journey. We have already booked in for next year. Don't forget to save your points. We are getting one free night after last year . .

My whole family loved that site. I could go for runs, my wife did some of the adult fitness classes and the kids just loved pretty much everything about the place. It did feel safe and there was no undesirables that I saw anyways. Also any problems we had were fixed extremely quickly.

Spent this year in Le Clarys Plage but Litterol looks like a good option for next year.

Did you book direct with Yelloh? Not any availability on other sites or much date options with Kelair. Must be either very popular or they hold back dates.

Also - looks like not all mobiles come with BBQ's. Can you hire decent size gas ones from reception?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,083 ✭✭✭juneg

Do we know what kind of spec this new ship will be? Better than the OW or not? Is it replacing the Epsilon? I've no ferry booked yet this year so I am thinking very strongly of booking this one.
By the way do Brittany ferries reduce their prices on the Pont Aven in January and if so is it by much? Thanks

It doesn't operate December, January or February.

We booked directly with Le Littoral - I can't comment on the BBQ situation though - we brought our caravan.

Just checked out the prices for a pitch, looks quite reasonable! Did you find it good value? If my french is to be relied upon, it looks like the smaller pitch is only €20 per night in early June (for 2017 anyway), and kids under 7 are free at that time! Was there any hidden charges? Electric free?
