Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sky showing bridges blocked by military trucks in Istanbul, tanks reportedly blocking Istanbul airport. Gunfire and jets reported over Ankara.

Govt spokesman talking of an attempted coup, in the passed sense as if it has failed.

About time. Good luck to them.
Attaturk wouldn't have let Erdogan go on this long

The military coup in Egypt stopped the country from becoming an Islamic dictatorship with Sharia law. Egypt seems to be back on the road to secularism now again. Hopefully the same will happen in Turkey. Often in these unstable Middle East countries, a military dictatorship can be the best option.

Erdogan is taking Turkey on a very backward path.

There have been many coups in Turkey, usually when the government strays from the secular vision of Attaturk and gets too islamist.
The only surprise is how long it's taken to happen.

The EU will do nothing as usual and Putin will do everything to gain from it..

I would not be surprised if Putin has had not had some hand in it..

I wonder who in the military is saying that. Is it Chief of Staff, is it a unified military command group. Or is it some smaller officer cadre who've organised it and are now making grand claims.

Just been talking to friends in Turkey on Facebook (residents, not tourists), so not sure about the veracity of "Facebook blocked".

Sky now have very unconfirmed reports - so pinch of salt - that senior military Generals have been taken prisoner. Which does suggest splintered coup.

What would you suggest they do?

For those interested in some academic work on coups and the role of the military, might I suggest: The Man on Horseback by S. Finer. A very readable book on the subject.

Jul 13: "France has temporarily shut down its embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara and its consulate in Istanbul, citing security reasons.

"The Embassy of France in Ankara, as well as the Consulate-General in Istanbul, will be closed from Wednesday July 13, 1pm (10:00 GMT), until further notice," the embassy said in a statement on Wednesday." Looks like France knew about the coup.

    Just being announced now apparently.
To restore democracy and the secular rule of law that has been eroded by the government.

  • Registered Users Posts: 548 ✭✭✭leavingirl

Isn't it some coincidence that the 9/11 28 pages news story came out at 18:14 GMT

Restore democracy by over throwing the elected government? Seems legit.

It's not unheard of. Turkey have precedent for it too.

Not the first time it's happened there. The army is sworn to uphold the secular constitution. Erdoghan has been doing his best to undermine it and crown him self sultan of his new caliphate.

Coups every 10-12 years. Major hassle for visitors but doubt it will be bloody.

In fairness to Erdogan he was elected by a big majority but his moves to install himself long term might be a bigger issue than any Islamic agenda. Turkey is pretty relaxed about that stuff.
