Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not the first time it's happened there. The army is sworn to uphold the secular constitution. Erdoghan has been doing his best to undermine it and crown him self sultan of his new caliphate.

Coups every 10-12 years. Major hassle for visitors but doubt it will be bloody.

In fairness to Erdogan he was elected by a big majority but his moves to install himself long term might be a bigger issue than any Islamic agenda. Turkey is pretty relaxed about that stuff.

But this one is hugely significant in the present climate

Erdo requesting asylum in Germany! Reports...

I wonder did last nights events have any influence in this.

A successful coup takes a lot of planning. If they are successful then they knew it was happening tonight. Maybe Erdogan's support for ISIS pissed off some in the military and the Nice attack was the straw that broke the camels back..

Erdogan was posting updates on FB up to 25 minutes ago. Google translate is poor but it's possible to work out what he's (or whoever is posting for him) saying. He appears to be calling people onto the streets and to the airport (Ataturk? Ankara?)

What would you suggest they do?
We don't have the ability to move probably 100s of Irish out of the country. Most people will want out. If moving people out starts, Irish people will be at the back of the queue. Irish Foreign Affairs won't be able to move them so they'll have to wait for another country to help. Might not be to bad though, coups are nothing new in Turkey

If Boris Johnson was elected Foreign Minister of Turkey it would have sparked a coup so who knows what the actual trigger was but the military are secular so there's no fear of anything particularly ugly replacing Erdogan.

You think the Turkish army just up and took over the country because some guy ran some people over in France?

Obviously this has been planned for some time.

    Excellent news.

The enlightened spirit of Ataturk is alive and well.

If the Turks can restore reason, as the Egyptians are attempting, it will go a long way toward combating global Islamism and making the world a safer, saner place.

Next step- expect European based Islamists and their comrades in the European Left to start wailing about oppressive "military juntas" denying the world another Islamic paradise- like, you know, Saudi Arabia, Iran or the Islamic State.

I hope they will win, but I suspect they will fail. Just like in Russia, Turks may prefer the leadership of a dictator to a democrat.

    Just being announced now apparently.
To restore democracy and the secular rule of law that has been eroded by the government.

So if they run an election... and the people want another person similar to Erdogan... what then?

Worst thing that could happen here would be an indecisive result in the coup attempt one way or the other, a civil war in Turkey would make syria/iraq/afgan look like chicken feed.
