Hi guys I am in the process of buying a caravan and i am wondering if it is actually cheaper to bring your own caravan or to just rent accommodation on the campsites in France. I have four children so there is six of us. Any feedback would be great thanks.

Depends where you stay and when you go.

5 star campsites with all the bells and whistles will be expensive - €50-70 - per night for your pitch. These campsites will also have their own accommodation which could work out cheaper for a week. These are usually located in rural areas.

Municipal campsites - in most towns / cities - and usually 3/4 star will not have all the bells and whistles and will be less expensive - €30 - per night for your pitch. These campsites though will allow you to access the town facilities, shops, leisure centres etc. These campsites will sometimes have their own accommodation which could also work out cheaper for a week.

It's swings and roundabouts! Select an area and do your research on the campsite types located in it. Bon chance!😀

Also depends on peak season and how long you're staying accommodation can triple in a desireable area between start of june and start of august.

If you went in June you'd easily find a 4 bed 'mobile home' / small challet (20-25m2) without veranda/deck for as little as €200 per week.

In july august same thing would be €500-€800, by the beach you could add 50% to those figures.

So off peak the saving on ferry and fuel might pay a weeks accommodation. On peak bringing the caravan will be cheaper than renting.

If you factor in purchase, maintenance, depreciation, storage etc. you need to be getting a lot of use out of it to save money.

How much extra is the caravan on the ferry, as opposed to just a car?
If you like the kind of holiday where you stay on one spot for the duration, then perhaps rent a cabin.

The mobile on the campsite in France is a fantastic way to spend the holidays. Travel in June or September for best value but that doesn't fit for everybody. If it has to be July or August it's top dollar no matter where you go on holiday.
A lot of the ACSI affiliated campsites have Mobiles to rent and their prices are very competitive if you check them out. Sometimes they are not exactly in the thick of the action location wise but you'll have a car so that shouldn't put you off. Many can be booked online with a deposit and a final full payment about a month before arrival so you need to be certain of travel dates etc.
Not much point in tying up money in keeping a caravan for 50 weeks of the year at home unless it gets a lot of weekend use as well.

We've not paid extra with the caravan to France, so it's definitely cheaper to bring the caravan, fuel consumption needs to be included of course but it's still cheaper.

I just checked my emails there and we're paying €580 for 12 nights on a 5 star campsite, that's a deluxe pitch with powe, water, drainage on the pitch which was €80 extra.
We've paid €1600 for accommodation on similar 5 star sites.

    "€580 for 12 nights on a 5 star campsite"

    Where? When? How many?

L'Anse du Brick, it's in Normandy, just 15mimutes from Cherbourg ferry. Be some change, we've often done 6.5 hrs from ferry in the past.

This is year 13 going to France and we wanted to do Normandy and the D day beaches.

    During August.

    2 adults, 2 kids, 8 & 13.
