my acer i5 5741 laptop wont switch on,
when charger plugged in the orange charging light comes on, tried
removing battery and using the charger but no luck,
tried holding on button down for 40 seconds, removing battery
    but no use,

i did have my laptop charger plugged into my car to charge it and was using it on that for 2hrs
last night but all seems fine till this morning

    any help appreciated

How were you charging from the car? I'm pretty sure you'd need an inverter to get it to work properly as a car port is a 12v output and a good many laptops run at 19v

First, get a multimeter and check that the output voltage of the power supply is within spec.

Try disconnecting it from the power supply, remove the battery and then hold down the power button for an exact minute. This works for my ageing acer but I fear it's doomed as I need to perform this ritual more and more frequently. If you do manage to get it running back up the hd to an external device.

Have you access to another power supply? It could be a dodgy connection in the cable.

Check the voltage on the power supply jack. I destroyed a charger by having it plugged into an inverter while driving.
A lot of inverters are not true sinewave and can effect electronic devices.
