Does anybody know if the Mater Public Hospital is suffering from a shortage of beds/ rooms?

Or what the criteria is for staying in a private room- First come first serve? Severity of illness?

    Thanks

Is it it not insurance related and then in order of severity of illness?

No, it's insurance related then first come first served. If you're severely ill you'll be either in the high dependency unit or the intensive care unit.

I've generally understood that with the pressure for spaces, a needs driven approach was adopted - infectious patients then those who deserve privacy in their fading days. Once you've accounted for those, I suspect most public hospitals will have few if any available single occupancy rooms.
