Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Plenty of rugby clubs are just FC and not RFC in Ireland

I'm guessing just that what was taken as the norm in Dublin (or indeed, cities in general) may not have been the case in more rural areas. (though obviously there's a bit of a barb to it too)

To be honest, I grew up in a rural Cork village calling it soccer (as did everyone around me) until I was probably 12 or so, and went to secondary school in the city. From then onwards it mostly switched over to being called football.

imo for clarification purposes alone, on this forum calling it soccer makes much more sense. Everyone knows at a glance exactly what this overall forum (tickets & travel, coaching, general chat) relates to.

The way I see it, and generally the way I have seen growing up is:

Play GAA mainly as a kid = soccer
Come from a rural area where GAA rules = soccer
Grew up playing football or from the city = football

I don't really care though. I always call it football and some people call it soccer. Who really cares that much? :pac:

    Football
    AFL
    Rugby
    American Football
    Gaelic Football

How could a person be confused??

Common sense should trump any confusion if someone goes through the ordeal of going to the wrong forum.

Because all those sports ypu mention are referred to as football and football alone by a large amount of people.

Association football doesn't own the right to only be referred to as football above any other code.

It really isn't that difficult to work out in fairness.

    Your snide post is irrelevant.

You can be in any of those forums and call it football all you want. What difference does it make to the other forums?

The name on the forum is for navigating the website, that it! It really isnt that difficult to figure out indeed!

I'm just pointing out a fact that you want to ignore.

You can't have 4 or 5 different forums with the same name on the website , it would be quite confusing.

If RTE refer to the game as soccer and the Irish Times and Irish Independent do likewise then I don't see what the big issue is with this website doing the same.It seems to be the standard phrase for identifying the sport in mainstream Irish media.

Then referring to it as association football would suffice.
The vast majority of those involved in one way or an other in the sport do not like the use of the term soccer.
Just like those involved with Gaelic football do not like the term bog-ball

One of those is intentionally derogatory, the other is an abbreviation of the original common name of the sport, and remains so in certain parts.

    It's a really, really bad comparison. :p

They should change the Forum Name to Football. Nobody but nobody will ever use the line "Did u watch the Soccer Euros Final? ":confused:

Its Football...Footie... Fussball etc only Americans ( becuase they want to protect 'American Football /NFL' from a " foreign" game) and Gah heads (becuase they want to protect 'Gaelic Football' from THE "foreign" game).

Same thinking that the coaches refuse to let kids train in any Premier League" kit ...its has to be O'Neills or Gaa County produced gear ...or no training given. Kid was sent home cause he was a Barca shirt. :|
    Rugby, Hurling, Gaelic Football etc.
Football is Football, Fifa, Uefa, played at the World Cup & Euros, only sport played in South America.
Perfected by the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Cryff, Zidane, Pele Etc. :)

Its time to change the Forum to FOOTBALL.
    Thank you.

Just spotted this, you're talking out of your arse here.

Really is a slow news week when this thread has been going for so long. It doesn't matter what the forum is called, so long as people keep using it.
