Wall socket sometimes doesn't work

The wall socket in our bedroom stopped working, but started working again when I plugged out the extension lead and plugged it in again. Then later the socket, or plug from the extension started whistling/buzzing, hard to describe the sound. Found a different extension lead and there has been no noise. Then plugged it out again to be safe while we were out. Just plugged it back in again there and it didn't seem to be working, so unplugged and plugged back in again and it was working again.

What would the cause of this be? Am a total noob when it comes to stuff like this so please dumb down any advice.

    Thanks in advance

Most likely a loose connection or a faulty socket. Do not use this socket until you get it repaired/replaced
It may also affect other sockets on the same circuit so you need to have this looked at promptly.

Not using this now, will call an electrician. When you say same circuit, what does that mean? The other sockets in the room, on the same floor?

    Thanks.

The sockets on the same circuit will be the ones that are on the same circuit breaker/fuse. If you are unsure which sockets are on the same circuit then turn off the associated circuit breaker(mcb/fuse/trip switch... Whatever you want to call it) and see what sockets don't work with it off.
Best advice would be to get an electrician to look at it sooner rather than later as it may be a fire hazard if left the way it is.

I'd be 99% sure you just need a replacement socket. Shouldn't cost you more than 50 euro to get the job done by a registered electrician.
