Thing was though, back during those dynasties I seem to remember the races as being excitement. The passing years may have made that so.

As a child watching on RTE...Stephen Roche versus Pedro Delgado. I remember that as exciting.

And very little harm, that'd be.

Here, here. Proven cheats like Zacharin are lucky to be able to make a living from cycling so I wouldn't feel sorry for him for missing greater glory at the Olympics.

It is all very predictable. No one is able to live with Froome.

    .
It's not just Froome though, a lot of his team would be GC contenders on other teams so he never has to stick his head in the wind until all the other teams are down to the last man, all the cards are stacked in their favour because they have so much cash.

We all know about Armstrong indurain has had a lot of rumours about him so that make froome the once in a generation sportsman.

much and all as I like seeing Dan attack, it cost him time there

Ya foolish. He has done that twice now on different stages and he has been pulled in very quickly. Just doesn't have the ability to put time on lads.
But maybe he feels he needs to do it to enjoy racing. With no teammate to pull him along he is stuck.

Bjarne Riis sums it up well:

"All these riders who were supposed to attack are not even good enough to be domestiques for Froome".

Sky have poisoned cycling beyond repair.

In what way, have Sky poisoned cycling?

Sick of all the dynasties in TDF history, Indurain was untouchable for years, then Armstrong, then a few years when it was a lottery, then the Sky dynasty with Wiggins/Froome

It's rarely a real competition. Most years 1 rider is way ahead of everyone else.

Have you seen this yellow jersey analysis? Froome's trajectory looks similar to Merckx/Hinault/Induran, could be in for a few more years of it too...

if Prudhomme wanted to make it more of a contest he may need to get more creative with the route to negate the strengths of Froome

SKY bought well. the domestiques in their own right are on a par with most of the GC men. Poels and Nieve did nothing to really extend themselves in the first 2 weeks, now they're fresh out.

Looking bad for Dan given he was totally exhausted at the end and laid out flat after the finish line, needs a fast recovery for the time trial.

Eurosport trying to build it up as if the TDF is not decided, despite them saying Froome has said that he never felt better in a 3rd week of the tour.

the thing being though Froomes a good all rounder so how do you negate that? only thing hes not great at is sprinting and the race be fairly dull with heaps of sprints

What does he do though? They stacked their team with climbers this time round. If it's a flatter tour he has Stannard, Roche Kiriyenka and half a dozen other riders to protect him.

Change the type of terrain up, maybe more cobbles. Not directly effecting Froome but perhaps changing the type of riders Sky might have to bring so that he has less specialists in the mountains with him

Pantano would make a decent domestique next year for some of the GC men looking for support in the hills

By assembling the best squad available? That's what happens in pro sports. If you dont like it I suggest you watch amateur racing.

Supposedly about to sign for Trek. Contador will have good doms in him and Mollema.

It would be much better fun if a lad had to change his own puncture or fix a chain! None of this team car behind you with everything laid on.

How good is Froome though? I was reading he had some unknown parasitic condition in his body for about 10 years and it is only now that his true ability is shining through.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

In keeping with Sky's marginal gains approach, I'd suggest to Wout Poels to stay off Twitter and any cycling related forums this evening.

In terms of the idea of watching sport to make you feel good, I think I'll retire from it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,525 ✭✭✭kilns

Its hard to resist Sky if you are a good rider with a short career, if you compare the salary budgets of say Sky and AG2R. Skys salary budget for the year was EUR 18.9m and AG2R was EUR 6.0

Dan attacking from 5km out was madness. If he had just done what Yeats has done and just hung in there he'd be top 3 now. It's been his early attacks that have cost him.

Meh top 3, so what. He's riding for the win, albeit in vain, but its better that than hanging around and waiting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

Yeah, it's a no-win. Noone attacks - why watch such tedium. You do attack early enough that it might be worthwhile, you just get swallowed up by the Sky men & lose time as a consequence. Fair do's to Dan for trying & always having the true spirit of sport within him.

Can you explain? I watched the last 8km and I'm at a loss. Did he punch a spectator?

No, just dropped some of the best climbers in the world by burning them off his wheel.
    Nothing to see here.

Lot of racing to be done. He's out of it now. Nothing to say froome won't crash or have a bad day. Having a go today with 5km to go was just asking for trouble.

Froome wont have that bad a day. If everyone rode like that we would get nowhere. Being 5 minutes down is not the time to be defensive. He gave it a go because he obviously felt strong, and in fairness Porte, Barde and Mollema have done the same at various points. A podium was always gonna be tough with his TT issues and a top 10 is still a great achievement.
