    Dell Inspiron 5357, Windows 8.1

It just happened today, all of a sudden a massive amount of static coming through the speakers.

    - Its there with headphones & without.
    - Turning the volume to zero shuts it off, though when on it is as loud at '5' as it is at '100'
    - No other audio is discernible (like when using YouTube/Skype).
    - None of the Dell/Windows utilities or device manager can discern that there is a problem
    - restored a system restore point just in case, but made no difference.

    Any suggestions?
    Is the hardware just busted?

    Thanks

Hardware. Can you replace cable or is it exclusive? What speakers are they?

I'm thinking to rule out hardware if the static is there with and without headphones. Would mean the speakers and the 3.5 jack are borked.

Did you perform any windows updates recently? Can you access your Device Manger and rollback the driver?

Might be an option to run the Dell automatic driver update to make sure everything is in order (just to actually rule out software).

Sounds like your DAC (presumably onboard) has failed outright.
