Very true. I don't drink lager at all in Ireland but I'll be in Spain soon thirsting for the Mahou/ Estrella Galicia / San Miguel.

A lot of people forget the context can add a lot to how we react to food or drink. A fine moment (weather / location / camaraderie and company etc) can mean an average beer becomes something else.

Lidl has Four Provinces Piper and Hurler cans in for 2 for €4. 330ml. Consistent/drinkable if nothing earth shattering and I like what the brewery is doing with its pub. Description of the beer is in Irish for anyone who needs having "Amber IPA" or "Copper Ale" explained!

A bog standard lager on a hot day, on holidays often ends up being the best you've had - and you'll never repeat it at home. See the people asking for Sagres/Super Bock/Estrella/Greek lagers on here :pac:

    Ha, guilty.....

Hoegaarden, pint, with a slice of orange. Gorgeous evening for it here in Limerick.

Aldi brown bear IPA Indian pale ale not altogether mad on Irish pale ale.
Tesco used to do a banana bread beer by Fuller's stopped selling it a while back. Stuff was smooth way too smooth for how strong it was.

    McGargles - Sean's Export Stout.

    LOVELY!

Lidl is doing the cans of Four Provinces Laidir porter as well albeit it seems to be sold out now any branch I've been to. An excellent porter.

On the Galway Bay Brewery Red Ale for the night.. It's a great drop

Beavertown’s Bloody Ell, was expecting much more to be honest. Weak & thin is best I can say about it.

Lidl has various cans from this German brewery currently. Nothing earth shattering but all perfectly drinkable.

Its a special but I'd be quite happy for that Red to become a regular; and the Imperial IPA is interesting and also deceptive in being 7.8% and just not tasting it.

I seen that in a bargain bin once day in the local off licence and bought a few. It was really nice stuff but I never seen it before or since. I’m having a few 9 White Deer stout at the moment.

It's not an actual brewery. Steam Brew is a brand of Eichbaum which makes most of the German beers you get in Lidl.

It was recommended to me to try Guinness Extra Stout. To me it is identical to Guinness Draught except gassed with CO2. Am I right in saying that? It definitely is as flavourless.

That's probably some of the most devious fake-brewery-branding I've seen then.

Still, the beers aren't made any worse by that.

    Yes.

Handily, German websites still have to have an impressum saying who's behind them.

I just dragged the website up cause there's multiple (actual) breweries with Steam in the name, I didn't read the sodding thing :p

In Liege for a few days, had a good night last night, ripped through a lot of serious beers, Rochefort 10 is about €4.20 a bottle.

In Port au Lait bar, the girls are drinking a mixture of Bush bier and diluting it with Pechreress Lindemans. Bush is 12% and Lindemans is a fruit beer of 2.5%.
Tastes great, sure what could possibly go wrong......

Wasn't impressed by the Steam stuff last time but was checking a few stores in South Dublin yesterday for the Imperiale Abbey one, which I like, that was also supposed to be on offer.

Not a sign of any of them - Steam or Abbey stuff - anywhere. Didn't look like they were sold out, rather just not stocked at all.

I think Laidir is on draught at their pub in Kimmage if you're in that neck of the woods.

On the Lidl thread people are saing many outlets don't have it at all and those that do have little stock.

None to be seen and no shelf labels for it last Sunday in my local branch, fwiw.

It'd be nice if their so-called "specials" were better than "drinkable" tbh as their normal range of canned beer is so poor (selection, quality and value)

Why can't they get And Union or somebody in, I'd gladly pay €10 for 4x500mL for the likes of those.

Because €10 for 4x500mL is available in Tesco and Lidl is not competing with Tesco at that game. They want to be charging less and they will only deal with suppliers, like Eichbaum and Rye River, who can provide that. And And Union presumably have no interest in nuking their deal with Noreast in order to make less money per beer sold in Ireland.

A few photos from Google of customers bringing dogs into the pub and it was an easy sell to the wife and all :)

Well this Noreast crowd whoever they are aren't making any money by not selling beer. Tesco, Dunnes, Molloys in my area none of them stock it.

Aldi have a much better range of "normal" beers and better specials than Lidl.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,922 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Noreast have one primary brand in their import roster that I'd be astounded if it isn't widely available - Erdinger. Ask the Molloys, they may be able to get it

I've bought And Union beers in a Eurospar (Ballymun/DCU) before so its not like they don't make them available.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,796 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

And Union beers available in the Noreast stocked pub in Derry too. I think they're just grand though, plenty of better, Irish options out there.

But probably stock Erdinger and Budvar, Noreast's bread-and-butter brands. And Union would be one of their smaller specialist brands, though SuperValu does stock the range, or at least my local one does.

Having a few of the Kinsale Black IPA this evening, hard to beat. I love when I can get a draught off something I drink (hence being delighted to know about the Laidir above and drinking the Stag Saor stout). Do Blacks do draught Black IPA anywhere? Thanks.
