Had a Northern Monk cherry cola sour last night. Strange aroma when opened, I kinda enjoyed it. Could definitely get the cherry cola flavours. I have a couple more for today

    Where did you get that?

In the West for the weekend, so having some mescan for the first time in a few years.

Have had the lager (on tap) porter, red triple, and "carnal knowledge" triple wheat.

All great beers. Welcome change from my usual craft central orders of pales/iPas/DIPAs/ etc etc.

Jasus, I'd love a few pints of that on draught. Is it popular in pubs, I've never seen it? I assume you're in vicinity of Westport..

Molloys leopardstown had some short dated stock. €2 a can

It’s got to be Westport. I had Mescan blonde on tap in McGings a couple of years ago

    In mulranny

I don’t think that they make a lager. I could be wrong. Either way it was a nice surprise to find it

Probably the 7 virtues lager. I had it on tap in a few places around Westport last summer, lovely stuff

On a Boon trip last night.

A 2000 bottled Gueuze Boon Marriage Parfait followed by a 2011 Boon Oude Kriek a la' Ancienne.

The gueuze had mellowed beautifully. Still sour but other elements of the beer come through with age.

The Kriek was good but a little thin. Did develop as I drank it, though. Both 37.5cl bottles.

That's a fine description of the l'Ancienne. Exactly how it hit for me when I had one before Christmas. I find it's one to air out like a red wine before going for it. Strange delicious beast that it is.

Yeah. I've had Kriek marriage Parfait that was pretty poor, though.
    Must try another, I guess!

White Hag's Little Olcan is a nice wee example of a brett influenced beer at a nice price too!

Lads, what's the story with availability of international beers in Ireland?

I went down a wine rabbit hole about 18 months ago and pretty much stopped drinking beer. I got the urge to have a couple of IPAs last week and went to the local decent offie to stock up. I used to drink a lot of UK beers - Cloudwater, Siren, Buxton, Beavertown and lots of US beers, all of which used to be easily available. Now, I can't find any of the usual suspects that I used to drink. I've checked several off-licences and well stocked supermarkets but apart from Irish stock, supplies appear to be very thin on the ground.

Is this a Brexit thing or have tastes and demand moved more towards Irish beer?

I think that Brexit has played a part.
But also, I think people are buying more Irish beer. The range is increasing all the time and there are plenty of quality beers there.

More specialist shops still have plenty of imports and they will have a better range of Irish, too.

I buy both but I like my basket to be more Irish than import.

My haul from Gees Wine shop in Derry last weekend. Looking forward to trying them. Haven't had any of Tiny Rebel's stuff for a fair few years.

There's hundreds of them and they're commonly available.

    Where are you?

My beer course is focussing on American beer this week and I went to three shops to get Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Lagunitas IPA, only got the Sierra and that was in Lidl! Tons of great Irish beer everywhere I went which is deadly to see of course. I'm sure I could have gotten them elsewhere but a fourth trip wasn't happening. I was able to get the Light Lager suggestion easy enough... Coors Light on the menu this evening! :P

SuperValu Sundrive has Lagunitas IPA, and I think it's in some Tescos as well. It really lost its way when Heineken Ireland took over distribution from Grand Cru.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭Twee.

Yeah I checked my local SuperValu as I would have thought they'd have both but no! Mace SCR had the huge bottles of Sierra Nevada but they're no good for a sampling session, it'd just be wasted.

Plenty of Lagunitas in Molloy's Clonsilla the other day, so maybe their Francis Street branch might have some, if that's handier for you.

Only a few weeks ago I found the email from my first order from Drinkstore. It was in August 2013.

Just looking at how much the market has changed. Back then my order was:

    Samuel Adams Winter Lager 355ML
    Innis & Gunn
    Blue Moon Brewmaster's Winter Sampler Box 12 x 355ML
    CHIMAY
Few differnet styles of Sierra Nevada and Brewdog

Not one Irish drink in the order. Now I buy probably about 95% Irish. Big change in 8 years

I used to drink loads of Innis & Gunn, haven't even seen it on sale recently - apparently C&C were to start distributing them this year for on-trade.

Older English IPAs - whatever Tesco had mainly - and premium Euro lagers otherwise made up my barely different from baseline drinking tastes at the time. Don't think I even went in to an O'Briens until 2011 or so and that was for scotch!

Have a rum cask Innis and Gunn in the fridge! Looking forward to it for old times sake. Currently enjoying a Brú Piqo Grodziskie. Never had this beer type before but I love smokey. This is fairly intense. Think you need to eat something with it but I'm enjoying it all the same. Liquid bacon

No need to go foreign any more for IPAs and stuff like that there’s great Irish stuff to fill your glass with
Only thing I’d regularly go for that can’t be bet yet by an Irish brewery is Belgian stuff

Where did you get the rum cask Innis and Gunn from. Used to love Innis and gunn original but doesn't seem to be available anywhere in Ireland anymore

Tesco Derry. It's the Carribbean Rum Cask. It's a clear bottle and I have to say despite it being clear its a lovely colour.

Speaking of Belgian stuff, had a bottle of Saison DuPont earlier. Lovely stuff.
