I had a glass in the Brew Dock the other night, couldn't detect any cherry at all.

Having a bottle of this now and can get some sweet cherry off it. It's nice enough but the only thing that makes it more that an ok porter is the touch of sweetness

Trouble gunslinger on cask and Yellowbelly forest fruit Project Sour both hitting it out of the park tonight. Bierhaus and Abbot's Ale House, Cork respectively.

€10.40 spend (as a Beoir member, €10 per anunum)
    2 glasses of each.

Drinking really great beer doesn't have to be expensive.

Maybe when it comes to local scene, then yes its not ridiculously expensive( still i feel like, little bit overpriced) but it's hard to find and not that many of it,
Its like you have to be on top of your game( twiteer instagram facebook) just to be able find something.

Went to de bierkoning in Amsterdam dear god,
1000(a thousand ) beers in one shop 300-500 different glasses to choise from.
You can go as cheap as you wish( (5% de molen for 2.20€) or dark lord 95€.
Went out to small shop next to my hotel (sterk) to buy some juice, again this is like centra 600-700 beers massive, massive selection 14!! Omnipollos at the shelfs some cheaper then galway bay beers!
Insane, Berlin again same story, Slovakia booming sceene (la pirata and tank 7 in most shops) dont you get me started with Cracow. 6€ for stout from praire artisan brewski list go on and on not to mention local scene

Why Dublin has to be so far back?
Why we cant just go and get quality beers?
same beers over and over again.
Beer market supposed to be to best multitap in Dublin, bul****.
Wheres promised buxton omnipollo lervig or even siren.

Same goes for any niche collecting hobby. If all you want is world-class beer in Dublin, every Porterhouse has Wrasslers XXXX on all the time. Job done.

We can. It's just your definition is too narrow, too specialised, and seems to be based on ratings websites rather than beer quality.

I'm an absolute and unashamed neophile. I rarely drink the same beer twice. But in twenty years of being picky about beers and ten years of documenting every single new one I drink, I have never been short of something new, interesting or different, either local or imported. Our experiences are obviously different but I guess we'd have to start citing taplists to compare them usefully.

All are imported into Ireland by Clada. Ask them. If it's bottles you're after, Redmond's always seems to have them.

Imported by ProAddition so very often to be found in the Galway Bay pubs. Are you saying there's none in any of them at the moment?

Ireland is terrible at everything when it comes to food and drink. No denying that, although we do try.

    Nonsense.
Produce wise, the best food in Europe, probably the world, is coming from Ireland.

Go eat somewhere like Chapter 1, Canteen Celbridge, Anair or Loom in Galway,
Cafe Paradiso in Cork and tell me Ireland is terrible at producing food.

Eh you've named two Michelin star restaurants, how's the beer there?

Together we can't do it sadly. Walk into many bar's in Europe or the states and they know how to do world class food and beer.

    You've moved the goalposts there!

Your first statement is patently wrong. Your second has perhaps some merit, but I've been to a lot of craft beer pubs around the world and very few have really bowled me over with their food offerings, certainly none have been world class. Suppose it depends what your definition of world class food is.
Churchkey in Washington DC was pretty good. But when I go to a pub, it's for the beers, when I want to go for world class food I go to a restaurant. I don't go to a restaurant for their wine list or their beer list, though that can play some part it's not the main focus.

Similar in the likes of BierCAB in Barcelona, Open Baladin in Rome or Tørst in New York: they make an effort with their food but aren't food destinations.

Well given this is the drink forum I thought you would have guessed what I meant but accept it might have being unclear.

All the pubs mentioned , GBB ones, Porthouse, P Macs, Bodytonic etc their food is all crap. Same goes for L Mullingans imo.

Yeah world class is up to the person. I had a Michelin star dinner from a vending machine in Tokyo recently for €8 which shows what a load of nonsense that guide has become. I personally think Vintage kitchen is one of the best places to eat in Dublin and would have Ananda in Dundrum for the best taster menu.

As mentioned Biercab in Barca, Bellwoods in Toronto, Woodsman in Portland etc etc.

It's an Irish attitude that "I only go to the pub for drinking" and hence the kitchen not getting a look in. It's not hard to do something whilst having a beer that's not
    Chicken Wings
    Burger
    Steak
    Fish and chips

That has a bit of flavor, even a simple Pan Con Tomate but no have a packet of pub crisps like a peasant.

    Read with understanding.
A THOUSAND different beers in one shop.
This not a niche hobby, its should be easy enough to get you quality product.
    New realeases every week,
How come its not a"niche" lol hobby in uk germany holland?

You dont even know me you dont knom my prefferences at all.

Got 500+ beers in my record, on my recent trip 2 brewery tours and 6-7 multitaps beers raging from doublebock sour beers trough ipa to stouts and even some smoked beers.

Dont try to be "i know all guy" coz you probably are not.

If you don't appreciate omnipollos rar trillium monkish and many many others, for me its a sight that you probably stuck on some oldschool belgian beers or classic german beers.
    Time to move on bud.

There is no denying that suply of many staff here in ireland is verry limited, and funny part is its not due its location or remoteness.

    Its pure lazynes, offten

As for stock bud i am in redmonds drink store and mc hughs on a WEEKLY basic i exactly know what in stock.
Most time i actually order stuff online with is not ideal, but its a reality here in dublin not only with beers.

There is no diversity in many aspects of fresh produce or drink.

Look at uk. They have everything.
    Dont be a hater,

4 cans of Dutch Gold for 10 euro? You're getting a raw deal there pal. I know a man who'll sell them to you for 4 for €5.

    PM for more info

Today I'm drinking soft drinks. Because I'm in Helsinki and it actually is a tenner a pint here - not the hyperbole people say when its just dear somewhere else.

Tap lineup in the bar I'm waiting for food in goes from 9.70 to 10.90 for 57cl.

Hope Estonia is cheaper later on!

  • Registered Users Posts: 972 ✭✭✭snowblind

Of course Ireland is a bit behind in the game, but it's a demand thing. The quality and quantity in California for example go hand in hand, it's tough trying to find bad beer in craft pubs. In Ireland there are some dreadful breweries, but a bunch of good ones too.

That goes for UK too. Last bunch of Siren beers I tried were all horribly pretentious and not worth 1/3 of their price. Even messed up a citra IPA, huh. London is a horrible place to try and find good beer unless you are in one of a couple of hip areas.

Ireland has a small population and is in the fringes of Europe, quality will get better with demand. I don't bother buying american IPA's that are at least a month old when I can get an 8 degrees, kinnegar or white hag for cheaper and nicer at least when fresh. Based on my recent visit, same couldn't be said in places like Utah or Arizona/New Mexico (outside Phoenix).

It does suck though how generic the food is in the GBB bars and how they lack atmosphere. Then again I think Mulligans is lovely.

Go to this place and drink some Cantillon
    http://www.stadinpanimo.fi/craft-beer-in-helsinki/

Or this one, it's in the suburbs next to the metro station, cheaper than hip places downtown
    http://www.pikkulintu.fi/

Also my brother opened up a shop for craft beer in the city center. Due to the alcohol laws he can only sell up to 4.7% stuff but he tries to get all available craft brews that fit the bill

  • Registered Users Posts: 972 ✭✭✭snowblind

But yeah craft beer in Helsinki is more expensive than here, though the median wages are lower. And the ****e-to-decent ratio is worse than here too. Funny that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Uncle_moe

Anyone tried Tropigamma by Beavertown? Bit reluctant at 6.50 a pop.
Had Stateside by Mikeller last night, not overly impressed considering the price. Siren tidal wave was better but not as good as some DIPAs I've had recently.

Pick up a 4 pack of Founders Redankulous in the local Next Door (Wicklow), think it was €3.99 a bottle. It's very drinkable and the 9.5% is not overbearing, worth a punt if you come across it.
