Don't think Ismaylov's c&j will be good enough to hang with Zhiyong. I think he'll likely be battling the dprk lifter for silver.

You never know with these Chinese and their squat jerkers. WC 2015 showed how inconsistent they can be.

I still think he'll win, but Ismayilov might cause an upset. Ideally he did need to come away with more than a 1kg advantage from the snatch though.

The guy from Georgia just got his lift. Why are the commentators saying he has only one more weight to go?

There's no Georgian lifters in this comp.

You get three attempts at the snatch and three attempts at the clean and jerk. Your best snatch and clean and jerk are added together to make a total. Highest total wins.

Did the Kyrgzstan guy just go higher than he knew he could lift in the hope that DPRK would follow him and fail, thereby leaving him in the bronze medal position? Clever

Cheers lads. Think it was the Albanian guy I must of thought of.

Kim myong hyok went all out for gold and going higher also helped him have more time. It didn't pay off but it was all downhill after messing up his recovery after his first attempt.

Think he was a Turk. One of the coaches had a Georgia tracksuit on.

That is three attempts each weight? The guy was successful and commentator said he had only one more weight to go. Confusing...lol

Think the DPRK guy was going for broke anyway.

You only get three attempts. A successful lift counts as one of your three attempts.

The man wearing the Georgia tracksuit is Giorgi Asanidze, former olympic champ and current coach of the Georgian weightlifting team. I guess he was also working with Turkey or maybe jusy Ismailov, perhaps in an advisory capacity.

I think it's quite common. Mirco Scarantino had Latvia's coach with him and the italian team are linked with Latvia's team. Ritvar Suharevs has been in Rome training all summer judging by his IG account.

Was just about to post to ask about that as I thought it was strange. Seemingly not though!

He did 211 at kazakh nationals with 4 attempts, he was also overweight then. This was a clear hail mary since he made a 12kg jump. Best lift of all time imo.

Rest day today so there will be no lifting. It will be back on tomorrow with the women's 75 and men's 85. Finally I can get a decent night's sleep!

Men's 85 has the potential to be an amazing session if the start list is anything to go by.

    94kg A session live now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,468 ✭✭✭DylanJM

94s were slightly underwhelming, especially after the highs of the 77 and 85 sessions.

Nice celebration from Didzbalis who took home the Bronze.

When you look at the list of names absent from the 94's and the 105's because of doping bans, it's clear to see why the standard is lower than the 77's and 85's.

I'd give anything to see Ilya vs Bedzhanyan vs Nurudinov again in a major competition.

    When are the 105 on?
Expecting Clarence to compete in absentia in some GAA hall pretty soon ;)

Nurudinov seems to be in good shape ahead of tonight's 105kg session.

    http://www.allthingsgym.com/ruslan-nurudinov-200kg-snatch-240kg-clean-jerk/

I think he will do 195/235 tonight. Unlikely anyone will be able to challenge him for gold. There will be a good fight for the other medals though as there are 4 or 5 lifters all around the same level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,723 ✭✭✭MightyMandarin

    Good session in the 105's.

One can't help but wonder how unreal Ilyin vs Bedzhanyan vs Nurudinov would've been though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,468 ✭✭✭DylanJM

Nurudinov takes gold in the 105s with 194+237=431. 237 is a new Olympic record. Delighted, absolutely fantastic lifter.

I love how he keeps the bar so damn close as he pulls in the snatch and clean. He has excellent technique.

Last day of lifting today. The +105kg A session will be on tonight at 23:00 Irish time. Should be a really good session. Lots of lifters with similar numbers.

Four years of build up and it's over in what feels like the blink of an eye. I have know idea what I'll do with myself tomorrow. I guess I'll start getting excited for Tokyo 2020!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭wintear

If the snatch portion is anything to go by, this will be a great finish to the weightlifting

Salimi's jerk is going to hold him back here.

Talakhadze goes 215+258 for the gold and a new total WR of 473kg. Salimi bombs with 245 on the jerk which was sad to watch.

Iranian fans didn't cover themselves in glory. Lots of booing and whistling after Salimi was done.
