Servicing my 03 1.9 diesel Passat here and noticed a small rubber washer in with the oil filter. Where does this go it's not for the sump plug.

It's a paper filter isn't it, with a large and a small rubber ring?

    Both go on the cap

Yes it is a paper filter. Couldn't see where it went so just put it back together without it.

The small rubber washer goes on the end of stem that goes down the middle of the filter from the filter cap.... one large rubber O ring goes on the thread of the filter cap and that little one goes on the bottom of the stem that is connected to the filter cap!?.. know what I mean??
