How to separate wifi signal 2/3, 1/3?

Hi guys,

We have our site in an area with fairly poor broadband which we use quite heavily for work.

At certain times in the day (namely before work, breaks, after work) the staff suck up the bandwidth, and little to nothing can get done in the office next to the canteen.

Is there any way for my to limit the bandwidth for certain sections of the business? E.g: 2/3 for the office, and 1/3 for the staff? Is this possible with a normal router?

You can limit bandwidth to a certain kbps based on the connected devices MAC address or just to all devices, however weither of not your router can do this is up to your router, also look into QOS.

Maybe a separate WiFi AP in the canteen with some form of bandwidth restriction applied just to it would work ? Most APs provide some form of QoS features. That's assuming your issue is mobile devices ?

Limiting all devices to a certain speed won't work for us, and there are too many devices to limit by MAC address,

Yup. I reckon this will have to be it. Will need to research how to split single broadband connection between multiple routers.

And yes, mobile devices.

Try to get management to put pressure on the IT department to sort this - this kind of setup should never have been approved to begin with.
