Collecting my car this weekend hopefully. I went to the NCT website to get an idea of how long to wait for a VRT inspection and nothing available in Dublin locations till 1st March it seems. I was hoping would be able to get one for middle of next week but seems not.

You can go to another county if you want, nothing says you need to go to Dublin.

I know I don't need to do it in Dublin but both Dublin offices are the most convenient for me. I have no problem waiting a few weeks to the appointment so will just do that and may get a cancellation perhaps one becomes available.

just got vrt paid on the car. €2908. you know its coming but its still sickening handing it over.

Has anyone got a Dekra Inspection done prior to putting money down? Would the garages mind that?

I was showing the lads in work your new car. They couldn't believe the price your got it for. One of the lads his son works in a main dealers selling cars. He knew the list price of it and said he was not selling much lately, he couldn't believe how much you got it for.

ah I just looked at the vrt receipt and it says the car is 170ps, I thought I bought a 140bhp version. is ps the same as bhp?

I knew it was a bit more powerful than a Passat I drove recently.

Divide the PS figure by 1.01387 to get HP figure. (Found on Google, hope this is correct).

    Not your ornery onager

No PS is roughly the same. 1ps = 0.986bhp

how did I miss that! oh well bit heavier on juice so but more valuable than the 140ps and great for overtaking.

Wait, so you didnt know you were actually buying the 170 version?? 😂

So, how do you know now that it is infact a 170 and not a 140??..

VRT could easily have made a mistake and incorrectly registered it as a 170

The car is finally on Irish plates, taxed and the NCT is booked! - I just wanted to say thanks to the OP and everyone else who's added to this thread, It was really helpful and made the whole process as painless as possible (apart from handing over the VRT)

Last photo of the 525d on UK plates!
    117_A238_E_E91_D_4697_B75_A_B2_C98_BF7_EC20.jpg

Now, to appeal the OMSP! :)

Im not a fan of Touring's but that does look very nice I have to say.

    I just love the fact that it's not a 520d!! :D

Edit: actually is that the 4cyl twin turbo version or the 6 pot version??

    ya I'm thinking that too.

I looked at the v5c, sales invoice, hpi check and there isn't any mention of it. how could I find this out for certain?

I'm presuming the vrt is correct as they check the vin and engine number.

Easiest way would be to google the engine code..

You can get it from the engine block or itll be on the log book

Also, never presume anything, i once had a Saloon A4 Sport incorrectly registered as an Avant SE

Google gave me nothing back. how should I phrase the search? maybe I could ring the garage it was first sold from and see do they have the info on file.

If it's a 170bhp version then that will determined by the car's VIN. VRT office go off the car's VIN.

Ya VRT receipt says 170ps so I'm presuming it is as they go off the VIN.

Just want to confirm its correct for insurance purposes, I thought it was 138 bhp on the dealers site but I might be wrong. In my defence I thought it was the DSG versions were 170bhp not the manuals.

So google tells me the CFFB is the 140 and the CFGB is the 170, I do infact have the 170 engine so. doesn't make much of a difference its a nice car, just will be a bit heavier on juice for the urban driving.

    It's the N47TU Twin Turbo 4pot, VRT on the 3L is 27% vs 19% so wasn't a runner.

Yeah, the fact it's not a 520d is very nice, it's hardly an M5 but it's certainly got some grunt.

    Now you know! ;)

Fuel consumption between the two will be negligible in the real world to be honest.

You should consider a remap on your 170, should take it up to around 210BHP with a healthy slice of extra Torque... and a lot of extra smiles per gallon :D

You will be replacing front tyres fairly frequently too. Had a CC with 140bhp and had it remapped to 170bhp which was plently imo. Still had occasional front wheel spin though trying to get the power down.

Yeah the benefit is not so much in tearing off from a set of trafiic lights in 1st and 2nd gear (especially not in a FWD) but the extra in-gear shove for overtaking and the likes... as in 3rd gear and above. I doubt that would give you any wheelspin.. unless youre rocking China's finest ditch finders.

I drove a remapped 170 before and it made a massive difference over standard, although it was a Quattro.

So just for anyone else who might be interested in the same car I'm going to list my final price and the expenses I incurred that would be applicable to most purchases.

First of all a huge thanks to everyone who answered my questions and the OP for an easy to follow process. Buying a car from the UK is a simple task and isn't even slightly daunting, I'll be doing it for future cars 100%.

Spec: VW CC GT 170ps 2.0TDI
    Year: 2012 (first reg dec 12 so almost a 13 :P)
    Mileage: 56k

    Purchase price - €11,215
    VRT - €2,951

    Expenses:
    AA Inspection: €239
    Flight €88
    Ferry €174
    HPI - €35 (I purchase a block of 3 its cheaper)
Airport to Dealer - (trains and taxi) - €60
Fuel (Birmingham to Cork) - €50
Food and drink - €50 (roughly probably less)

    Total: €14,862
    Budget: €15k

So I came under budget, I could of saved another couple hundred by doing the following

-not booking inspection with AA as Dekra do it and direct with Dekra was £28 cheaper.
    - booking your flights, ferry and train well in advance, I booked everything 4 days before I travelled so flight was €40 more, trains €20 more, ferry €20 more.
    - jumping on the exchange rate the market closed on the Friday at €1.152, I waited till Monday when it opened hoping it would go down further but when I went to buy it jumped back up €1.167, that's another €90 almost. However I continued on the up since I bought it so not all bad.

I am absolutely delighted with my purchase and definitely saved €3-4k on the market price here. I dealt with a fantastic VW group service specialist called V-Hub in Gloucestershire and would highly recommend them for anyone looking for a high spec VW or Audi.

It makes it even more worth while when dealing with a good dealer tbh.

How did you go about transferring the money to the dealer? And did it take long for it to go through?

My timeline was all a little rushed, it all happened so quickly.

I put the deposit down on Friday, the following Monday I booked the inspection, earliest I could get was Thursday so I had to pay the full balance by transfer before the inspection, probably not ideal but I felt good about the car so went ahead with it, anything that came up anyway would need to fixed.

For the transfer I went with transfermate, I rang them on Thursday before I put down the deposit asking to open an account, they email you a form to fill out and want a utility bill plus copy of passport. Account is open the next day then.
Rang them up on the Monday said I want £9000, they lock in the rate (its binding you cant back out), give you the amount in € and email you their AIB details. I made the transfer to them on Tuesday, sent them the beneficiary details by email on Wednesday and the dealer confirmed he had it Thursday morning.

    That's great price for VRT

In November I bought a VW CC GT 177bhp 2.0tdi (Reg may 131)

    Paid 11200 for car
But a whooping 4100 on VRT

Hardly 1100 of a difference in vrt because of a couple months is there?

Why dont you put your cars exact details through the VRT online calculator again and find out??..

Reading what you said about the Dekra, am I right in thinking that garages won't allow inspection prior to full price arriving at dealer?

Could do! I vrt'd an 09 Golf in December, if I vrt'd it in January it'd be 300 less...The new year seems to have an impact.
