What a striking and complete Olympic location - city, mountains, water, all jumbled together spectacularly :D
(Water pollution and poverty not so good though :()
ETA cobbles to the miseries - ouch for the fallen!

Two of my picks in the break. Happy with that

There'll be none but the elite to win this surely given the parcours and the hard racing already. Not just brutal hills but cobbles also!

I meant them do it in English of course :D

I usually have to watch on TG4 and not understand a word but the 2 lads always sound really into it.

The Irish isn't that difficult for goodness sake!

Ouch that fall must have been sore on the hard dusty cobbles

Fairly difficult if you don't know Irish.

Was really reacting to the 'majority of the population' crack.

Looking at the toughness of this I think I'd stump for Nibali if picking a name.

Is he the same Turkish lad who had an issue not long after the start? Edit, yeah, BBC said so.

Right, I'm off, nobody call or text me with the result until after I get home and watch the recording.

Cav outsprints Froome for the win.

I said that (wrote) earlier in the week and you were no no no?

    That descent is scary

    oops echleons...this race has everyting

This is a hard race! I've not seen a single day race this tough from this early on regardless of the ability of some of the lesser nations.

And now crosswinds... this race has everything.

They should have just got the TG4 guys in to cover it .

Think you're exaggerating my scepticism. I just mentioned it looked hard to distance everyone that longish flat at the end, though wasn't saying twas impossible. Well seeing it firsthandish it certainly looks made for the hardest & I'll go with your tip! Froome wouldn't surprise me at all either tobh, nor of course would several others.

OK where can I watch the race now? RTE doesn't seem to work. Any other legal streams?

20 finishers at best I reckon.

So far this has been a bit like a sportive, mixed with stage 1 of the Gorey mixed with the Angliru mixed with the World championship RR. Saw Tim Wellans earlier flicking the arm at a chap from Peru and another lad from Mehico biting the handlebars.
    Cracking race!

Albasini loses a bottle on the cobbles. That'll cost him some time stopping to go back and get it.

I got a 'front row' seat for BBC.;)

Chris Froome ignores criticism of his ungainly style to put in a stinging attack on the roads of Rio.

Claims that Froome has put on some extra pounds post-Tour may be well founded.

Probably with the TT in mind.

BBC commentators not great. Seem to be bemused by the whole thing.

Separately, just saw Nico amongst the cars with Mollema there.
