We all wear them but never seen a thread on how to chose and which ones are good. I have been alternating between Lidl and proper gloves over the years and not convinced that the gloves that cost a lot more are any better. A few days before ROK I treated myself to a new pair of Altura gloves and I hate them and think the reason is that they are too big for me. When trying them on I noticed that large are really tight and I do not have particularly big hands so went with XL which are still very snug but think they are bunching up in my palms.

So what is the deal? Are cycling gloves supposed to be VERY tight? I'd worry that they'd cut odd circulation and give me pins and needles. The Lidl ones seem to have more gel and last longer and the padding in the name brand ones seems to squish down very quickly.

I also only ever buy finger-less which may also be the wrong decision?

What do you all do and what gloves do you recommend?

    Thank you!

I've a pair of the galibier aero mitts and find them very comfortable. Nice fit. Good amount of padding. Gets my vote

I have a pair of Castelli Arenberg, Nalini sonethings, Monton mitts from China and a pair of mitts from Aldi and to be honest my favourite are the cheapest Monton gloves. They have good gel padding and are a perfect fit. The Arenbergs are a good fit also but the gel pads are too rigid. The Nalini gloves are very thin with minimal padding and I wear them on very warm days. The Aldi gloves are a good fit but the whole palm is padded with additional gel pads in the usual places and so they're a bit too thick and I don't wear them very often.

I like mine to be reasonably tight as they usually stretch after being worn a few times.

I have had many varieties. The best I have found at the right price were mits and also winter gloves in Planet X

I have Sealskinz gloves for winter — got them on Amazon on a cheap deal for something like £7, but normally they're ridiculously dear. They're great gloves, padded and warm and reasonably waterproof, but they have one flaw: in really heavy rain they'll get soggy inside, and when you pull your hands out the lining turns inside out, and they then can't be used because it's impossible to get the lining of the fingers to go back in the glove fingers.
As a solution to this I've now bought silk lining gloves, and before winter comes will sew the lining to the point of the fingers.
It's worth putting Sealskinz winter gloves on a camelcamelcamel.com watch to find them when the price becomes reasonable.
My hands are small, but I think the gloves I got are men's size small rather than woman's, and they fit.

so true. and what the numerous threads will tell you is that what some people swear by others will find useless. very much a case of try and hope you get lucky

Don't wear gloves on the road bike in the summer anymore - hate them now (used to wear them all the time).

Rapha winter gloves are awesome if it's cold.

    that's what i thought too.

so i bought a 30 euros pair of gloves, and with my cold hands i froze, so kept trying different pairs, nothing has worked, to the point i'd have saved money by buying the rapha and probably have had warm hands the last two winters.

sometimes you need to look at value and not price

I've thought of adding a hole to the little fingertip of each glove to let them drain. It's just the thought of the fiddly stitching...

I use Prendas super roubaix gloves as liners under the sealskinz. They're also good with mitts when the evenings get cold...

I am happy for you to prove me wrong.

So are bike gloves supposed to be fit very tight?

Google site search because boards.ie's site search doesn't seem to be working (defaults to "advanced search" screen and then doesn't respond, on this Mac using Chrome and latest MacOS)

do you want someone to make you a coffee while they do the searching for you too? :)

and that's just a random search. there is usually a big thread every winter as people suffer with cold hands. there was one last year but it didn't show up in teh first few search results and i'm not spending time looking for it. as was mentioned, there are tons of gloves threads

Aldi summer mitts are an absolute winner. I was skeptical, but they wear very well.

Gloves should be tight, not just cycling gloves IMO. Padding is a very personal thing, a lot of people I know simply don't care about it.

Fingerless for summer and good thermal gloves for winter .

These are the most comfortable I've used (and expensive).

    Winter:
Good winter gloves are going to be top of my list when the weather changes. Last year I remember having to stop a few times when it was near zero and raining as I couldn't feel my hands anymore. Not nice and pretty dangerous.

Friend of mine has Seal Skinz which he thinks are great. So I'll try those.

I use a glove liner like this most of the time in winter. A trick I learned when skiing a few years ago. I used to get sweaty hands when skiing (it's a different kind of cold, that doesn't really penetrate like the cold of home), and the glove liners would stop my wet hands from getting cold - a bit like a base layer would on your body.

    Summer:
I have a pair of Pearl Izumis which have nice gel padding in the right places.

I really like going gloveless actually, but I thought it might have been contributing to shoulder stiffness from road buzz - might have been a coincidence either.

The Rapha gloves have dropped dramatically in quality for the price (or indeed, anywhere close)

I've sent back 3 pairs?. The Palm leather cracks and the stitching rips... Stay well away.

Winter wise, Chapeau! Do a great pair, particularly if on sale. The Assos Fugu glove is also top notch.. Half price on Wiggle now, if you are size S.

Summer wise, Lizard skins do a fantastic leather glove that is very similiar to the (very Gucci!) Giro Lx glove ( which Rapha re brand as their own, I'm told)

But the finger length needs to be long enough. It may not be that noticeable when you try them on or on short rides but, on a long winter ride, having your fingertips cramped against the ends of the gloves will drive you insane.

Though in winter those fingerless Scrooge gloves are great if you want to count your money or shiver in your heatingless hovel.

SealSkinz Winter Gloves, which I like are cheap(ish) (€20ish) on several sites at the moment, including sealskinz.com, but on most sites only in Small and XL for some reason.

Thank you. Still not finding any posts about how gloves should fit but would appear that they need to be very snug. I have avoided tight fitting gloves as they cut off circulation.

There is one suggestion in this thread of just not wearing gloves and getting better bar tape which I think is what I am going to try. My bar tape is brand new so for next few spins going to try cycle without gloves to see how that feels.

I don't wear gloves to dampen any vibration but to protect my palms in the event of a fall.
Also handy to wipe away sweat.
