Oh and in Normandy/Pays de la Loire, every second village/town was gorgeous, but some of the highlights for me were...

    - Saint Mere Eglise. A bit kitsch but the airborne museum was very interesting and WW2 feels very recent there.
    - Bayeux. The old town is gorgeous and has some great restaurants.
    - I passed through a string of towns south of Lisieux that were fab. (Livarot, Vimoutiers, Moulins la Marche, Belleme). Great views.
    - Le Loir (not to be confused with La Loire) was lovely to cycle along.
    - The little town of Ambrieres-les-Vallees had particularly awesome views.
    - The medieval town of Domfront felt like something out of Game of Thrones:

Had one of the best creperies too.

Low-lights were Caen (dump) and Carentan (of Band of Brothers fame. Not much charm).
