    Hi,

Im trying to repaint a wooden gate with a different colour from the Cuprinol Garden Shages range. The new coat of paint wont take to the existing colour and after some googling I see that sometimes the wax layer can apparently come to the fore if it was painted whilst warm. I dont remember it being overly warm when I painted it two years ago but anyways......

I've googled and people have recommended using turps or some sort of spirit on it to break down the wax coating. I've tried rubbing this on with a cloth and then try the paint again but still wont take. I've also tried sanding the gate but again still wont take the paint.

Short of having to to remake the wooden gate, does anyone have any ideas??

I had a similar problem last week, fence painted last year with 3 coats, so I just wanted to freshen it up with another coat. But the paint didn't take very well.

What I found worked was to put the paint on best as you can and after a couple on mins when it gets 'tacky' spread it again with the brush and it adhered fine...

Admittedly though I was using the same colour

Im in an awkward position that some of the wood is fresh an the rest is painted and I want it all a different colour. I rang Curpinol and they said to use a stiff garden brush with hot water and fairy liquid to help break down the wax. Sounds like an awful lot of work.

A high tack primer might work. This is used for painting over tiles and other tricky surfaces. I used it to paint over a high gloss interior wood last year and it worked a dream, no sanding needed

Dulux make it, I would source it in a paint specialist and getting some advice before going to woodies. Double check it can be used as exterior

Fairy liquid haha....thats a good one!....im afraid water over oil has and will never work...u would have to strip or go to an oil based paint im afraid :/

I rang the local hardware guy and he suggested to use Ronseal as its more of a chalk based paint and can even paint over metal and it worked! Only one coat on so far, not as much of a colour choice as cuprinol, but as this stage it'll do!
