A while back I posted about a buckle in my back wheel, well I have decided to buy a new set of wheels. Background info only just back at cycling, spend 800 euro on the bike four months ago. Big guy, 6`3" build like it too.

Got a quote for mavic asksium for 315 euro with tyres and tubes. Is is this ok ? are the suitable for clydesdale horse like me

    The original wheels were sr2

    Thanks in advance

Cyclesuperstore had Mavic Askium Elite wheelsets for €250, and that included tyres and tubes.
    €315 seems very dear.

Merlin Cycles have them in stock for €200 + P+P

    36 spokes minimum.

    Easy to deal with.

When I got my ass back on my road bike about 6 years ago, I weighed about the same as you.
I used Fulcrum Racing 3s and Campagnolo Zondas without any problem.
Around the same time, I used cheap Planet X wheels, which were a disaster. I kept breaking spokes and cracking rims on them.
I have no experience with Mavic Askiums.

I think he tries to protect people from themselves, the type who want a ten spoke wheel with a dynamo hub. :)

Similar weight myself. My bike came with Aksiums as standard and they were grand but they are pretty much a stock wheel. The tyres they come with as standard on the Aksium wheels are Mavic Aksion which are pretty poor, I replaced them immediately. If was dropping 300 plus I wouldn't be going that route.
As Eamonnator mentioned Zondas will take your weight , roll really well and be fairly resilient. You'll pick them up mail order from some of the German sites for about 320. If your current tyres are reasonable use them for a little while. You'll pick up a set of reasonable tyres for less than 40 at some point.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to talk to him again about the alternatives. He is the guy I bought the bike from and because I did not abuse the bike I want to chance my hand getting the wheels replaced under the guarantee.Bike only 3 months old. At least that way maybe I can sell them for 100 euro

Cheers he mentioned cycle superstore today, will try. The figures taking the cheapest tyres and tubes is around 300 euro is he is not too far off. More concerned that they will last to be honest.

So do the ones on Merlin.

@Eamonnator, figured that, was clarifying for OP comparing two bricks and mortar. But yes that Merlin deal saves OP even more, assuming reasonable shipping from merlin.
