That's because you're watching the glorious leader's feed*. Fiji are actually two up.

(* may actually be Gangnam Style Korea)

Fiji with a sensational 1-0 half time lead against Mexico.

Argentina Algeria 0-0 at HT but very entertaining. Brazilian crowd roaring on the Algerians.

Brazil draw another blank, 0-0 against Iraq this time...

They don't seem to have enough creativity in midfield, although Augusto should have scored near the end.

There's a real danger they'll be knocked out at the group stages now. Current standings:

    Denmark - 4
    Brazil - 2
    Iraq - 2
    South Africa - 1

They play Denmark next. If that ends up a draw and there's a win in the other game then they will be out.

That would be a massive humiliation.

    Not over yet either!

I don't have the answers to all of these but I remember reading somewhere that when they decided to reconvene the olympics back in the early part of last century, the Olympic people consulted the English public schools to see how they should approach it in terms of fair play and sportsmanship.

At the time, the way sport was played in the public school system was that you basically turned up and played. Any training was actually considered akin to cheating. Just show up and get stuck in and the best man will win - jolly good show and all that.

So any sport that was professional or involved a lot of training at the time wasn't allowed. Hence amateur football and boxing.

But stupid now though given that Tennis, Golf etc are allowed in.

AFAIK the rules have been altered slightly for soccer cause there are no amateurs really. It's U21 with a couple of older players allowed or something.

It's an U-23 tournament in which you're allowed to pick three players over the age limit.

Ireland have been in it twice but the last time was 1948.

For the Irish team to qualify we would have had to reach the semi-final stage of the 2015 U-21 Euros - but we didn't even qualify for the tournament.

Brazil 1-0 up against Denmark. Gabigol with the goal.

Edit: 2-0 now. Jesus the scorer. Looks like they won't be going out early after all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 489 ✭✭R00ster

Iraq hit the post and were desperately unlucky that the rebound was just behind the incoming player. Really knocking on the door now. Winner takes all now, a draw is no good for either side with Brazil 3-0 up. Missed a free header and a 1-on-1 as I was typing....

John Obi Mikel of all people scores for Nigeria to put them 1-0 up against Denmark.

Colombia are playing Brazil now. Obviously, I hope they knock the home team out.

10 minutes gone in the Brazil-Colombia game and it's already descended into a niggly, spiteful affair.
Super free-kick from Neymar should settle a few nerves

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,382 ✭✭✭Duffy the Vampire Slayer

These two teams hate each other.

Real ugly atmosphere around this game. I have to say football has been a bit of a blight on the Olympics what with Hope Solo calling the Swedes cowards after they beat the USA, and the petulant bickering on offer in this game with the referee getting surrounded.

You really see how the morals of this sport are in the sewer right now when you contrast it with the sportsmanship in the other sports.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,382 ✭✭✭Duffy the Vampire Slayer

Neymar is a disgusting cheat. I hope that the Colombians knee him in the back again.

Yellow card fest. Zero chance of this finishing 11 v 11.

So Brazil advance to play Honduras in the semi-finals; Germany meet Nigeria in the other game.

It's looking like Brazil vs Germany in the final which would be fascinating considering what Germany did to Brazil two years ago. Then again, Honduras might be able to cause an upset. I don't think they were fancied to get this far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

The women's semi-final between Brazil and Sweden has finished 0-0 after Extra-Time and is about to go to penalties.

It's being shown live on BBC Four and RTE News Now.

Big upset if the Swedes can win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

And Brazil miss their second peno.

Chance for the Swedes to take the lead. But it's saved as well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

And Brazil miss! Sweden can win it now.

And they have! Sweden are in the final!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,694 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

Disappointed for Marta, but delighted for Sweden after Hope Solo's comments. Just a much better organised team. Brazil very poor.

  • Registered Users Posts: 489 ✭✭R00ster

Neymar scores after 14 seconds against Honduras. At some cost though, looks to have hurt his ribs in doing so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭Ronan Raver77

Brazil 4-0 73"...some amount of frees conceded by Honduras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

6-0 to Brazil. That's going to be tough to get over for Honduras.

A Brazil vs Germany final will be great if the Germans can get past Nigeria later.

May have been answered earlier but, why dont Ireland have an under 23 team for this? Is it to do with rankings? Don't remember us having a team when we ranked in top 20 though.

The European places at the tournament went to the 4 teams that reached the semi-finals of last year's U-21 Euros. Ireland didn't even qualify for those Euros.

Brazil vs Germany is about to start at 9:30 in the men's final. Live on BBC Four right now.

Should be absolutely fascinating since the Brazilians desperately want a gold medal for their team (the one major honour they haven't won) and also the fact that the Germans destroyed their dream two years ago at the World Cup.

    Teams are in:

I'll go for Brazil to win 2-0.

There are a serious amount of players on show that look like Rylan or male hairdressers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    German dressing room:

'Time to make zem cry once again.'

But I fancy Brazil to hang on this time - though I wouldn't bet on it.

Do the germans have anyone decent on the bench?

Nils Petersen is one of their over 23 years old players and is on the bench. He's their joint top scorer in the tournament so I expect he'll feature if things don't change.

Bah, I was waiting for the game to return on BBC Four and it turns out it's now on BBC 2. RTE 2 are showing it as well.

To try and not sound like Dunphy, the Game is heading in a very bad direction after watching these 2 teams.

From the excessive amounts of male grooming and preening by the Brazil team, to the clear lack of ability to counter attack, to the Germans preferring to pass the ball around the back rather create a chance.

Coaches have a lot to answer for. It seems to be a growing trend that young players have a complete inability to make a counter attack count and chose to keep the ball and slow the game down.

But there's been plenty of attacking play on show.

The Germans scored 21 goals in their 5 games prior to this one and if not for the woodwork would have scored more than the one they already have tonight.

There's outstanding quality on show here and I'd say it's been a very good final.

It's not the quality that is the problem. There are a lot of good players there. My problem is the mentality of the players.

The German team are passing it around the back for no apparent reason. They are achieving nothing by doing it and look most likely to concede when they are passing it.
