Best way to play main series games?

    I've a 3DS lying around a while and I see that including the upcoming releases there'll be 2 gens on it as well as 2 gens for the DS which I'll be able to play, as well as the remakes. Is there any benefit to playing the remakes or earlier games for tranferring game saves etc.? Or from the Virtual Console versions?

    Thanks.

    The virtual console remakes or red/blue/yellow are well done and allow you to trade with other 3ds versions but you can't transfer pokemon over to current gen games from them. They're only a tenner on the e shop which will cost you less than getting a gameboy and an original cartridge. You can transfer pokemon from the original gameboy advance games all the way up to the current omega ruby & alpha sapphire games (albeit rather awkwardly) and any subsequent ds games. Depending on what games you want to transfer from you may need another ds system. The remakes of gold and silver available on the ds are some of the best in my opinion but are rather pricey these days. You can't transfer any game saves over, only pokemon and you can't send them back to the original games either once they've been transferred over.

    Grand so it's worth starting at the "start"?

    Doesn't really make a difference TBH. The one thing you might find if you go from newer games to the older ones is that they can feel slower and have different features so you might find it worthwhile to start at the beginning.

    You can trade pokemon from Gen 1 to Gen 6 using the Pokemon Bank I'm pretty sure.

    I'd play the Original games remastered, then go straight to Heartgold/Soulsilver -> Platinum -> Black/White/B2/W2 -> X/Y -> Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby.

    Not sure how Gen 5 is, I've only played Black once and I'm not sure how BW2 is in comparison.

    Probably a stupid question but looking again, does it make much difference white Black/White/Black 2/White 2 which versions to go with?

    If I remember correctly, the "2" versions have older gen Pokes early on in the game rather than the post game. That might impact your decision if you were choosing between B/W and B2/W2.

    B and W each have their own Version exclusive area (White Forest and Black City I think) on top of Version exclusive Pokémon, so I'd read up on them to see what you prefer!
