HELP! How do I get back to the dialler in the Phone App (android)??

I'm in the phone app, and its stuck in the 'Select contacts' screen. How do I get out and back to the dialler screen? Utterly flummoxed. Phone is a samsung galaxy a3 2016.

At the top of the screen is there an option for Keypad?

Can't see it. There are 3 greyed out options: Log, favourites and contacts and a search box to find a contact.

EDIT: turned phone off and on again. Can now access the above menus again and the dialler. Dont know what happened originally to cause the situation though.
