Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As Syria Transition Date Passes, US Makes No Policy Change

In May this year John Kerry gave a 1st August deadline for Assad to leave power in Syria, he said
"The target date for the transition is the first of August," Kerry told reporters. "So we're now coming up to May. So either something happens in these next few months, or they are asking for a very different track."

He didn't specify what the different track was, but its been suggested that it involves arming the rebels with new weapons via Saudi Arabia.

It's now the 4th August and it seems nothing has happened, well not openly.

Its typical American hypocrisy, its like saying "I want that fire out by 1st August or I'm going to throw petrol on it"

I think America should just keep it's nose and weapons out of Syria, by arming so called moderates it can only prolong the war and general suffering of every Syrian person, and as has been shown time and time again, the weapons always end up in ISIS hands, and I think its deliberate, they were even caught dropping weapons to ISIS then said it was a mistake.

War is good for America, that's why they have been almost constantly at it for a couple of hundred years.

A policy change would be very hard to discern as who the hell knows what the golfer-in-chief's policy is in the first place?

Captured from Iraqi army. Hardly the same as deliberately arming them.

That said, everytime I see an ISIL fighter he's either firing a Russian made AK47 or driving a Russian made tank.

By your logic that must mean Russia are deliberately arming ISIL.

Democrats always seem to believe history starts today. Today, that 1 August date was always just a target and not a firm deadline. Today, there will be no ramifications or changes in strategy. Today, politics dictate we'll let the next president deal with Syria at a later date.

Just think what tomorrow will say.

Not really no. It's expensive as hell, there was no "return" on the billions wasted in Iraq. Men and women lose lives and courses of military action have, in general, become more publically unpopular

International arms companies have indirectly benefitted from international conflicts since the year dot

Unless the US relinquishes it's role as the "world's policeman" and adopts a more isolationist role, then it will always be involved in a range of conflicts, for a range of reasons

    I agree

The US was by far the top arms exporter in 2011-15, with a 33 per cent share of the global market. Exports from the US have increased 27 per cent in the last five years.

Worked with a man from Aleepo who's an overly qualified technician who should be a practicing surgeon. It's human issues like this that make it so real.

Syria has been nothing but a massive embarrassment for the US. Attempting to oust Assad has proven to be a massive mistake. Syria under Assad's control was a far better and safer place. You would think that lessons were learned from Libya.

Good thing Clinton is going to be elected so, she's shown a deft hand dealing with the region to date...
