Training to become Unix Admin

    Ok, bit of a strange question but I am looking to train myself up as Unix Admin(HPUX, AIX, Solaris etc).

    Now I know this is not an easy task but it's something I want to do. So I am just wondering where I start? is there a specific course? also would that course be available via online/non classroom based option.

    Kind of need to get an idea where to start and fire off from there?

    A good starting point might be the O'Reilly learning paths which I believe have Sysadmin parts. As well, practicing with various distros and tools like puppet, nagios etc and learning a scripting language such as Perl or Python would be a beginning.

    I don't know what experience you have so far, but the one tool that you absolutely need to master for any Unix Sys Admin role is the shell. Understand the shell properly and you're well on your way.

    If you have little experience with Unix Administration, go to Oracle and get the latest Solaris build. Run it in a VM: Virtualbox or Boxes. You could then get your hands on a few manuals online.

    One example of a useful manual is https://ubuntudanmark.dk/filer/fwunixref.pdf From there, once you gain some experience in using the distro, you could begin writing scripts in Perl or Bash.

    Seems like a strange plan for something you seem to know little or nothing about.

    what is it about the job that attracts you to it?
    Find something in that and concentrate on the aspects of it you want to know more about and become good at that. This will automatically lead you on to other aspects. The scope is too wide to give you a general guideline. find something about it you like and go with it.

    I have been involved in recruiting Unix/Linux admins for over 10 years.
    Get certified, people always complain of the cost but you can't put a price on your career. You can keep the costs down by just doing the exams.

    If you succeed and you end up as a unix/linux contractor you will be very very happy with the effort and money you put into it.

    HPUX, i believe, is not under active development any more, and seems to be decline.

    The cost is nothing like what a university education would cost, and the financial rewards can be much better.
