Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm surprised at the level of defense given to a highly disruptive event that will disrupt much of Dublin's transport... Is it because only a few people work there on Sunday mornings so "they don't matter"?

I thought this was the commuting and transport forum...

We probably need a few fatalities, like the Mafia House concert in the Phoenix Park, before local residents views are taken on board.

Wow. That is of very poor taste. My mind boggles at how some fatalities would corroborate your complaints over access and parking.

I see the Dublin Marathon may sell out this year at 17.5k people! The residents adjacent to that route have been sacrificing their access for many years. Great to see such a welcoming and positive attitude. Many would say it's a trait of the Irish.

Rolling road closures are far from a scam.

Exactly. The alternative is a blanket closure of roads irrespective or whether there are athletes there or not.

Rolling closures reduce the impact of the event even further.

What is the event for large women light olive? As the wife may be interested :-).
I'll have to take a detour on Sunday morning but it's no issue as it's only for a few hours in the morning. It's worse if you didn't know in advance and get turned away at a road block.

Or, and I know this is a revolutionary idea, they could walk across if in the city centre! According to any of the signage the disruption and closures are primarily to vehicular traffic, and while there may be delays in crossing roads, there should be crossing points where people can be gotten across between competitors passing.

A fair point though I was (perhaps mistakenly) assuming that if the roads were closed, crossing on foot would also be a no go. As an aside what section of the triathlon goes over the quays? If it's the cycle then assuming the rolling closures are on the ball (i.e the junctions aren't closed 30 mins before and 30 mins after the peleton passes) then disruption should be minimal. If it's the run then it is fairly poorly planned.

Is Carton House not on the same side of the Liffey as Castleknock?

There is no peleton in triathlon, you'll have dribs and drabs of varying levels scattered around the course, determined by a combination of their wave start and swim time.

The road to it will be closed due to the Ironman event.

Saying there are rolling closures just means earlier sections will be opened up. My reading of the flier, there's large sections that are closed off for quite a long duration of the event.

Will it definitely be possible to walk across the quays? Will need to get to Trinity on Saturday morning from the northside. Also everyone suggesting the M50 as an alternative assumes that everyone can drive or that they have somewhere to park once they get southside.

DCC information page on the matter states that pedestrian access will be maintained, so while I'm not sure of the exact logistics, it seems as though there will be a mechanism in place for it.

The road to it will be closed due to the Ironman event.

Only the Dunboyne Rd entrance, the main entrance will still be open.

There's a Garda controlled crossing point at the Moyglare crossroads. So it's possible to get from the M3 to Carton. I'm not sure if the junction on the R156 is open for you to turn left where the cyclists are turning right, but if not you can take the right turn just after Ballymcoll Stud on the road to Maynooth. From there head to Kilcloon, and then keep going west on to the Moyglare road. Then South through the crossing into Maynooth.

Nice of DB to essentially completely cut Dunboyne off for most of the morning with them only going to Clonee

Dunno why they can't terimate at Dunboyne train station as they've always done whenever there's an event going through the village - particularly as the Ironman track turns right to come down the Rooske Road right past my place; which is way before the train station.

Its a ridiculous situation, no consultation with any of the transport providers.
You have a situation now that passengers coming in from Dublin Airport and whos hotel is lets say in Temple Bar or Merrion Sq will have to be taken via the M50 to get there.
Its wrong , pure and simple.
You would imagine DCC would have at least provided one bridge to remain open in the city centre, but no they go ahead and allow an Ironman competition to disrupt the public and tourists alike.

This happened last Saturday as well - these guys are operating to an agenda that does not consider the needs of their own citizens.

It's normal for cities across the world to hold large events like these. Although the Ironman route seems to be one of the most disruptive I've seen. But some of it seem to extended closing hours listed when rolling closures may lead to the roads opened quicker???

This happened last Saturday as well - these guys are operating to an agenda that does not consider the needs of their own citizens.

Last week's event was far less disruptive, ie the East Link kept open and bridges opening as the event moved westwards.

It would surely be worth a parliamentary question why there isn't a free toll on the mornings when things like this are going on.

I got stuck on the wrong side of this this morning - in the Phoenix Park, home in Kilmainham - went off around the M50 to the N7 (having heard that the N4 was backed up) and was home in 15 minutes.

Hardly the end of the world!

    Nope.

I'm no Garth Brooks fan either. But when you look at the amount of disruption caused by Ironman on the roads, it really exposes how silly the whole DCC Vs a concert really was.

Nope what? Nope he wasn't given permission for several gigs?

For starters the closures were spread over 3 Dublin councils and 1 Meath one I'm sure, and while extensive across the city, was only 1 morning.

Plus there wasn't already a planning permission clause allowing a limit to such events which would have been exceeded had the Iron Man gone ahead.

You either want the city to follow agreed upon planning guidelines, or you can go back to the previous decades where such minor trivialities could be rode rough shod on a brown envelope over.

I just want DCC to be consistant and sensible. I remember the days of "brown envelopes" and even as far back as Wood Quay.

I got stuck on the wrong side of this this morning - in the Phoenix Park, home in Kilmainham - went off around the M50 to the N7 (having heard that the N4 was backed up) and was home in 15 minutes.

Hardly the end of the world!
this raises a question for me; in that people are complaining that the road closures would cost them extra in terms of possibly/probably paying tolls; assuming they actually do, what is an extra €3 once in one year, really compared to the cost of just owning a car, let alone using it?

you get to use your car 365 days a year, and it does cost money; but why should you resent the freedom you have to do so being curtailed in a relatively small way for probably 0.1% of the time you use that car (and only if you're directly affected by the closures).

i own a 07 reg skoda octavia. it costs me nearly a grand a year just to have it sitting in the driveway (and that's assuming it passes the NCT with no problems). i'd feel like a right prick if i was to insist that that thousand quid entitled me to prevent a triathlon from taking place. if car ownership entitles people to prevent such activities from taking place, we really have reached the wrong balance.

    Does it?
Road closures for a few hours vs. a tubby Texan who spat out his dummy in a huff over only being allowed to play three concerts in Croker.
