Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I brought a UK car from the north and paid VRT a few years ago.

I going to live in the UK now for a year or two.

If I export the car and change plates over to UK plates will I have to pay VRT again when I bring it back to ireland again in 2 years time?

If you paid VRT to bring the car in, they will refund the appropriate amount on export, less an administrative charge. If you get this refund you will have to pay it VRT (at the then rate) when you re-import the car.

Check out the sums to see if it is better to sell it here or re-export it. Then, if you do re-export it, is it worth bringing it back.

Are you not exempt from vrt when importing a car if you have been living in the UK for the past 6+ months and are moving to Ireland?

Just be careful about the VRT refund. They don't automatically refund you the money and you need to apply for it around the time you leave or just before. I think part if it includes having to go to an NCT centre to have the car inspected/verified before you leave. If you wait until after you leave, you may not get the refund without going through an appeals process which has no guarantee of success.

Not sure how it affects things if you claim VRT back then move back again to Ireland.

I'd sell the car now and buy a new one over there, then you will be able to return with it in a year or so and not have a bugger of a VRT bill as you will be covered under a residence transfer relief
